College Tuition

Post by PeteC »

I haven't looked at this for a long time, perhaps similar to many others, so get ready to get your socks knocked off!

Only looked at three top rated schools in the USA, Stanford, Notre Dame and University of Pennsylvania. All including room and board for four years is about $200,000.00 as of the 2009-2010 year. By the time my little one here is ready in about 2023, It will probably be 320+. This doesn't include books and other general expenses. Some serious saving needed if the above is the route parents decide upon.

I assume the cost is similar in the UK and EU. Pete

EDIT: Whoops, sorry, typo above. 250 should be 200.

My kids go to the university system here in California. For Calif residents it runs about $15,000 per year tuition and fees only, they live at home.

While the Cal state schools aren't in the ranking of the ones Pete mentioned, they are very fine schools.

Mid ranked schools that are private are still 25,000 per year before room and board.

Luckily mine like the local schools, and do very well!!

I've thought about this a lot since I researched the info this morning. It's all really a game, isn't it. I'm still officially a resident of California as well, therefore my little daughter is also by default. She would be eligible for the Ca., school program as a resident in 2023 if it still exists.

It all depends upon what direction she wants to go in, and in many less expensive schools you get the same or better than the big name places academically depending upon your major. You just don't have the 'snoot' power to say you graduated from ???.

I think by 2023 things like that may (hopefully) be less important. Universities here in Asia may be on equal par by then, who knows.

Regardless, a parent still has to start a savings routine at age 5 latest. Pete

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the above schools stated they receive approximately 14,000 applications for Freshman year, each year. They accept between 1,400 and 1,700 with SAT's 1400+ combined and top 5% of class.

This sounds really pretentious...but it aint... I just respect the blokes opinion......

HH The Dalai Lama says that no matter how much the costs, education is the key to social progress .... so no matter how much it costs its what y do. Make kids cleverer and they dont mess up like we did.....

I came from a socialist system that paid for me to have the best education path I could be provided with. I ended up with a masters degree..... for FREE. Now the same costs you a debt to HM Gvt of about £20K payable in easy 20 year installments. A lesson we learned from the USA.

My education from cradle to bar stool was paid for by taxation and a belief that educating muppets makes for a stronger society. Thats English Socialism for you.....

Here in La La Land I pay whatever it costs to send my (loose adpotion) kids to a good school. Id rather they went to a UK university bit frankly thats a daydream. No matter what I pay the eduation is by rote and not by mind. Anyway.... back to my point.....

NOW......

here its understandable.... its a developing country.

In my country mate this is a dumb argument. Not many but even the lowest can get into Oxford on a scholarship care of the pay back state.... I got the last of a socialist education and a masters for FREE. Yanks look North and ask " Hey why the hell havent we got free medical and free goodish schools for all? Their kids aint shooting up the library...why the hell are ours?????"

Dont you think there is something gone badly wrong with a state set up by som of the greatest aetheist intellectual scholars....managed by some of the best examples of man......

where now only the rich get educated?

sorry mate.... I just fancy an intellectual cut and thrust.... and Im dancing with Ms Chang....

even sober I think the Us education system is messed up tho

Sandman,

It is messed up over here, costs run rampant due to the granting of tenure to professors, cost over runs, etc.

I have some professor clients that teach 1 class, yet make 80,000++ per year with great bene's and the job is guaranteed for life

Pete, the UC school system is top notch. My kids both have not wanted the fast track thru USC/ Stanford, etc, but have both been challenged with the education.

I've monitored their work, and it is at a good level and pace.
