School terms and holidays

We have two children, one at high school the other at university, both are boarding at the respective facilities.
The problem I have is that it seems to be impossible to find out when they MUST be in attendance and when not, neither facility seems to be able to provide a list of term dates and holidays. I realize Thailand works somewhat differently than elsewhere but surely common sense prevails somewhere down the line.

We were going on vacation 5 December when the eldest called on the 4th and advised Uni was closing for 5 days and she must come home, vacation dates had to be changed.

We went on vacation with revised date of 10 December and 16 December we get a phone call from the youngest asking why we are not at home as she has just come home as the school is closed for 7 days, we had to cut short our vacation and return today.

It seems bloody ridiculous however talking top the missus just makes it worse, she just says "This is Thailand".

Does anyone have any real idea.
