No worries VS......my place is pretty good and very professional too with the locals as they all have to have a Phd to teach there (no complaints from me either). Although, I speak from a privileged position as it's quite high up the list of top universities in Thailand.

My post was from experience of the average 'run-of-the-mill' places I experienced for the first 5-7 years of being here.

I hope they have warned the UK teachers about the colossal mess that is the Thai Education system. I hope they've also been warned about the complete contempt that they will receive from Thai teachers that is hidden behind that smile. I assume they've also been warned not to try and change anything in any of the schools as that will result in people losing face.

I truly hope they've been told that...

"You're there to be a white face - nothing more, nothing less".

You mean he's on an ego trip and is feeding off the respect he is getting?

Does that really make up for the complete contempt, and 2 faced behavior day in, day out from workmates?

I work (support staff) for a International school in Bangkok and all expat teachers have work permits and are fully qualified.

I would predict that almost all of the new school in Hua Hins teachers will come from outside of Hua Hin. For two reasons, 1. there are probably very few if any fully qualified teachers in Hua Hin ( PGSE). 2. The management of the school will probably bring a lot of staff from their previous schools in Bangkok.
PGSE?
yes it was a typo, but could not edit it.

NO

If he performs the job well he get's respect and doesn't get all the stuff you mentioned.

Same with any job. Do it well and treat your peers, management and subordinates in the right way you gain respect

I'm sorry richard, but that is not the picture GLC paints.

Not sticking up for his comments but I've been to his school and met the teachers (and some very important ones in the hierarchy) and he has more respect than he can handle. His trouble is like many. He wants to change things which prove impossible. I have regular criticisms regarding the school that my daughters go to. However, nothing will change.

To give you a couple of examples.

My eldest daughter was told that she spelt her name wrong. I sent in a copy of her birth certificate but instead of agreeing the correct spelling, they agreed that she could spell her name both ways (mustn't lose face)

She recently came 2nd in the whole of Prachuab in a national English competition between schools. Yet her school gave her a 'C' in her oral examination because she had a 'bad accent'. She's a native English speaker!

I get frustrated but I still carry on teaching. You never know, one day something might just stick.

Sounds like education here is like all other things, to quote my wife. "You will never change Thailand, so give up or let Thailand change you".

She tells me that every time I point out something that they do here that is totally illogicical and even idiotic.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

One word... money!

I have lived and worked here long enough now to see things for how they really are. The rose tinted glasses are completely off and I need a move somewhere. If I was retired in Hua Hin I would be thoroughly enjoying the place but... I'm not.

I'd love to move back to Hua Hin but I wouldn't get out of bed for the money Hua Hin school's offer as a salary.

Teaching has become a chore for me. The stupidity of many school's directors is amazing (My current director is actually ok). The hidden hatred from many of the Thai teachers has surfaced (I wouldn't be too happy either knowing that that 'farang' is in my country earning 5 times my salary for the same workload). The fact that it isn't a career has become very evident for me.

Teaching in Thailand... do it as a hobby, don't expect anything from it.

I can understand HHtel & GLC's comments as there are a couple of older teachers (i think over 45)who live where i stay. They come home most evenings almost in tears at the stupidity/unfairness/narrow-mindedness ect of the schools they teach in.
..they see me sitting reading a book in the common garden area and they always say, 'Dont work here if you dont need to'
When nosy expats ask how can i live here without working, i reply, 'well, while you worked hard for 50 years, i worked smart for 5 years' :D

I thought you were a teacher here in HH. Sorry if I'm mistaken. Obviously a wrong assumption I made when I saw you step into Euro bar suitably dressed in work clothes
