Hi Francois
I brought a Besta GPS Advance last year from the guy in market village selling Cyberdict products, as it seemed impossible to obtain decent mapping for my Magelan or Garmin GPSs.
The mapping uses a program called SpeedNavi SQ which I have just upgraded free on the internet to SQ+, this has included new mapping and searchable telephone numbers to its database. It has voice navigation which I find to be very accurate. My only critique would be that the Km and time to route finish are too small, possibly my eye sight!
The unit runs on windows CE 5 and is touch screen, it comes with translation dictionarys which will voice words in Thai from eleven other languages which I find very handy.
Having done considerable research I think that the speedNavi program is possibly the best to be found for mapping in Thailand, if you look on the site under upgrades you will find a list of compatable units it will run on.
Hope this helps

Hi Francois

I bought a Garmin Nuevi from the bookshop on the top floor of Market Village a couple of years ago for around THB 12,000 at the time.

Easily reprogrammed the map to English from the CD-ROM supplied.

Also voice and touchscreen menu in English.

I've been extremely happy with it - you can even hotels, golf courses, ATMs, government offices, etc., etc.

If you want to call round for a beer, you can take a look at it :)

Thanks for the link. I did not go deeply in this thread as I thought it was more intended for hand held units.

Nevertheless, I got a nice link which is now bookmarked on my computer :)

I have the same and the map (GIS Data) is very good. But sometimes it looses connection and has problems to find it again. e.g. if I park the car at Suvanabhumi it has no connection when driving back and during driving it does not find it. So you would have to park outside for about 10 minutes to find it again and then it works well. But I think you can't buy it in Hua Hin, because there is no Cyberdict at market village any more.

I bought my Garmin Nuvi GPS from the gadget trend shop in Thonglor Bangkok 3 years ago. I found the sales people to be very informative, they certainly knew their products.

I have had mixed results using the device due to the patchy satellite coverage (particularly in Bangkok) and it spends most of its time in the glove compartment of my car. It has proved useful in the past to find golf courses and hotels that are off the beaten track.

Hi Fracois
I bought a Garmin 1390T and a thai map i europe last year. I must say that I am extremely satisfied with it.
I have not yet experienced that the sattelite signal is disappearing (except off course in parking houses etc.) and it finds the signal very quickly.
It also has a "pedestrian mode" which combined with the small size (160 g / 5.7 ounces) is rather usefull, since it makes it a lot easyer to find my car in the huge parking lots at shopping centers etc. (and no... it is not because I am drunk when I head back home)

Hi Francois,
I am using a Garmin Nuvi 660 in Europe.
From a torrent site I have downloaded the Garmin Thailand Street Map V8.0 and installed it on my device. It works great.
I have used it al over Thailand and I can find my way in Bangkok like a taxi driver.
The only problem is on elevated highways, where it can not determine if you are on the upper or lower level.

What kinda price range are we looking at here? I too am thinking of buying, my BKK AtoZ is fairly dog-eared, and I no doubt look like a proper luddite when squinting at it.

Is it better value to buy a Garmin in HH or are there greater discounts to be had in BKK?

I made the mistake of getting a Tom Tom before finding out there's no coverage in LoS

Garmin 205W seems to be the same price everywhere I have looked. BKK or Hua Hin. 10,900 Bht at Gadget trends in BKK same at Index and book store at lotus in Hua Hin. They come with Thailand map installed but sometimes you have to order it and wait 2 or 3 days if you buy in HH.
I bought one and like it. I didn't like the prices here in LOS however.
