HUA HIN: Eight family members, including two children, narrowly escaped death when their car burst into flames after being hit by a truck on a bypass road in Hua Hin on Saturday.

The accident took place near the turn-off leading to the Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam floating market at around 12.05pm, said police.

Fire trucks were deployed to the scene, where a white Ford Fiesta was engulfed in flames. Firefighters took more than one hour to put out the blaze. Traffic in the area was cleared at around 1.30pm.

Eight people -- two men, four women and two girls -- were injured and rushed to Hua Hin Hospital. They were Chaiyaphat Triphettra, 30; Ms Patthara Khoplop, 29; Ms Chonnapha Khophop 23; Mrs Wanphen Khophop, 58, Pornpisit Khamsaeng, 27; Ms Monthicha Khophop, 24; Neungthida Khamsaeng, 7; and Maneerat Wongsuwan, 3.

A police investigation found that the car had left downtown Hua Hin and was on its way to Wat Huay Mongkol. When it was about to pass the intersection leading to the floating market, a 10-wheel truck travelling on the bypass road arrived at the same time. The truck driver failed to apply brakes, causing the vehicle to hit the car.

The force of the crash caused the car to skid off the road and it suddenly burst into flames. All eight people inside the car managed to escape.

^^ Ford Fiestas are obviously a lot bigger than they used to be.

I can't help but think it's one of those "back room" LPG conversions again to burn like that. Illegal conversion or not, even the certified conversions I don't trust at all in an accident! I think you would be hard pressed to find any passenger van for hire that isn't LPG these days.

A Ford Fiesta is what Ford call a "super mini". Only has a 1.5 litre engine and not really a candidate for LPG.

Not seen any more about the truck accident near Pattaya. Also, not any other accidents being reported. Bangkok is a ghost town, so there must be a lot of traffic someplace!

The wife is following the Pattaya truck accident all the way from Tokyo. Something she's read in Thai is that a vehicle full of Monks took the brunt of it. :(

Passengers narrowly escape death in Chaiyaphum bus crash

All passengers on board two inter-provincial buses narrowly escaped death when one of the vehicles skidded off the slippery road, crashed into roadside barriers and overturned, sending broken concrete flying into the windscreen of another bus on Sunday night.

Nine passengers on board the Chaiyaphum-bound bus were hurt in the accident reported at 9.50pm on Chaiyaphum-Sikhiu Road in Noen Sa-nga district, near a bridge over the Chi River, said Pol Capt Ong-ard Lekkla, deputy investigation chief at Noen Sa-nga police station.

The impact of the first bus crashing nto the roadside barriers sent slabs of broken concrete flying through the air, and several smashed the windscreen of the other bus coming from the opposite direction at the time.

More than 30 passengers were on board the second bus, travelling from Loei to Bangkok, but despite panicked screams, all escaped unhurt.

I still find it strange that there have not been any other accident reports. I do not believe that a 4 day weekend, with an obvious exodus from Bangkok, has resulted in no major "accidents"! :?

Moped and quad bike warning for UK tourists

"In December 2017, a 23-year-old Northern Irish man had his leg amputated after a moped crash in Thailand."

"In May of last year, a pregnant British woman was killed while riding a scooter with her partner in Thailand."

"In 2015, an England team badminton player was killed - also in Thailand - when her friend drove their moped into the path of a truck."

Should be bloody banned outright unless they have a motorcycle licence....

15 injured in tour bus overturn

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURAT THANI: Fifteen passengers were injured when a double-decker airconditioned tour bus heading from Bangkok to Phuket overturned in Khirirat Nikhom district of this southern province on Sunday morning, police said.

The accident occurred at about 4.15am at kilometre marker 45 near Ban Khlong Khan in tambon Tham Niap.

Uthai Somkantha, 30, the tour bus driver, said the bus left Bangkok at 7pm on Saturday with 29 passengers, heading for Phuket. At Ban Khlong Khan, he lost control of the bus at a sharp curve because the road was wet and slippery, causing the vehicle to overturn and lie on one side.

Fifteen passengers were injured and admitted to Khirirat Nikhom Hospital. Seven of them were later transferred to Surat Thani Hospital and four to Phuket Hospital, while the other four were released.

Woman rams car into airport guard who clamped wheel

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/crime/ ... mped-wheel

CHIANG MAI: A hot-tempered 69-year-old woman has been arrested and charged after ramming her pickup truck into a security guard who had clamped her wheel at Chiang Mai international airport on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred after Phattra Boonchaliew was hit with a 400 baht parking fine at the airport, according to police called to the scene about 4.30pm on Monday.

Ms Phattra was at the airport to see her friend off, and left her pickup parked in front of the passenger terminal for more than an hour.
When she came out of the terminal, she saw a wheel of her pickup had been clamped. She appeared upset, but went and paid the fine, police said.

She returned to her vehicle and showed the receipt to the security guard who had locked up the wheel, Vatchara Chaiwong, 27. The wheel was released.

According to police, she then started the engine and accelerated the vehicle into the security guard, who was dragged along the road and severely injured. The pickup also hit four other vehicles before officials and on-lookers forced it to stop 40-50 metres further on.

The incident caused panic among nearby travellers and airport staff.

Mr Vatchara was rushed to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital and police took Ms Phattra to Phu Ping Ratchaniwet police station for legal action.

Piyasak Chaitha, a deputy managing director of M.A.I Inter National Co, the security guard's employer, said on Tuesday that Mr Vatchara's relatives were planning to bring a charge of attempted murder against the driver.

Footage from security cameras showed the pickup truck hitting and dragging the security guard along the road, and running over his body. Mr Vatchara suffered a broken pelvis, broken arms and severe bruising. He remains in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Chiang Mai News Online reported.

and updated today:

http://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/d ... e-revoked/

Following the case on a driver who rammed an airport security guard. After The Dementia Association of Thailand has confirmed that Patra Boonchaloew is a dementia patient, Chiang Mai Land Transport Office has issued a request to revoke her driver license to the Lampang Office who has granted the request.

The license she held was issued under the former law which does not have the expiration date and does not require renewal.
The police say that they have yet to file charges against the woman as they are still in the process of collecting evidence. As to the security guard, he has gained his consciousness but still being hospitalised.

I wonder how much she had to pay for the medical "certificate".

She wouldn't have needed a medical certificate. I guess she's had her licence for donkey's years. It used to be the case that a driving licence was for life.

I didn't mean for a licence. How much for the The Dementia Association of Thailand to certify her to get her off the hook!
