Woman's licence revoked for multiple crashes at airport

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/crime/ ... at-airport

The Land Transport Department has revoked the lifelong driving licence of the hot-tempered woman who drove her pickup truck into the Chiang Mai airport guard who clamped her wheel, for her mental illness.

Sophon Pitaksalee, land transport chief of Lampang province, said his office found that Phattra Boonchaliew, 69, had been unstable emotionally -- she was reportedly easily provoked and unpredictably aggressive. Besides, she was forgetful and often lost her way while driving. (shite, sounds like me  )

The Lampang land transport branch which had issued her lifelong driving licence revoked the document because she was not healthy enough to drive safely. The land transport office in Chiang Mai province also requested the revocation after crashes at Chiang Mai airport, Mr Sophon said.

The multiple crashes at the airport happened on Monday when Miss Phattra parked her pickup truck at a no-parking zone in front of the airport's passenger terminal to see a friend off.

An airport security guard clamped her wheel because the vehicle had been parked there longer than an hour.
The woman paid a 400-baht fine and returned to the parking area where she reportedly talked emotionally to Vatchara Chaiwong, 24, the guard on duty.

After Mr Vachara unlocked the clamp, she started the engine and rammed into him, dragging him for a long distance while crashing six vehicles along the way, to the shock of bystanders.

Mr Vachara suffered abdominal injuries, broken pelvis, arm, spine and shoulder blade. His relatives filed a complaint with police accusing her of attempted murder.

The driver, Ekkalak Deesud, 36, admitted that he dozed off. He was detained to face a charge of reckless driving causing injuries.

How the heck do you get 25 children into a minibus - ok I know it’s physically possible as this case shows, but why on earth don’t the authorities clamp down on this type of overcrowding - thank god, but this could easily have been 25 children killed!!

It's no mini-bus, it's a regular passenger van of the type you see on the roads everyday. Photos at the link. Pete :(

EDIT: You can see how they fit so many from one of the photos. Appears they have removed the normal seats and put hard benches in running front to back along the walls. Wouldn't be surprised to learn there was a third bench running up the middle! Where are the bloody seat belts?! NONE from appearances. :banghead: :cuss:

I would call that a minibus. However, this photo tells the story:

We use those buses a lot for football, and our driver will not permit more than 10 passengers, and everybody has to be belted up. That bus has had it's official seating taken out, and replaced with planks to maximise the space, which I believe is illegal. Certainly none of those kids would have been belted up.

My son was involved in a serious accident just over a year ago. The other party was:
  • Riding an unregistered bike
  • Had no insurance
  • Had no tax
  • Not wearing a helmet
All of the above were classified as minor offences, and not taken into consideration. I guess replacing regular seats with planks and not wearing seat belts will be the same - minor offences. TIT :?

Danny boy-- You ask why there is no clamp down on all this horrendous slaughter--I just checked you have been in THAI for several years, You must know that they make laws, rules, regulations BUT there is NO enforcement. I dont think that there is a Thai word for clamp down. This must be the only country in the world where a dictatorship has no control of its people and their actions.

Another un-necessary death caused by "me first". I was very nearly "squashed" in this exact same spot a couple of years ago. It is one thing to run along the shoulder, especially here as it is just before an off ramp, but something else to do it at such a speed that you cannot stop. I can see this place from my Condo, and at rush hour in the morning it is bumper to bumper. :guns:

Woman falls to death from expressway after hit by SUV

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

A car driving on the shoulder of an elevated expressway hit a parked van during rush hours on Monday morning, sending the van owner into a fatal plunge to the road below.

Expressway police reported the accident around 8.45am on the inbound Chalongrat Expressway near the Sukhumvit 50 exit in Wattana district.

Thannapat Wipanpong, 68, had parked her KIA van on the road shoulder after an engine problem. She was standing outside the vehicle, making a phone call and waiting while a policeman tried to repair it.

A Toyota Fortuner driven by Nutchanat Promna, 34, ran onto the road shoulder, hitting the rear of the parked van, police said. The impact knocked the unfortunate Ms Thannapt over the safety wall and she fell to her death on the road below.

Pol Sub Lt Supoj Chainok, who had parked his motorcycle at the scene to help Ms Thannapat, was also slightly injured, as was a pregnant passenger sitting in the van.
The police motorcycle was also damaged.

Pol Lt Col Siranawitch Inthorn, the deputy chief of the Expressway Police traffic division 2, said Ms Nutchanat was interrogated and she would be charged.

Such a sad regrettable incident but one that I expect to see every time I go on a highway. Thais have no consideration for others, they do not think they have to follow any laws no matter how dangerous their actions are.

Two killed, 10 injured in van-trailer lorry crash

Two people were killed and 10 others were injured when their passenger van smashed into a lorry with a trailer in Muang district on Monday.

The accident happened on Dong Rai-Ban Phue Road in tambon Ban Khao around noon.

After the collision on the four-lane road without a traffic median, the lorry and its trailer registered in Nakhon Pathom province blocked traffic as the driver appeared to have lost control of it in the rain. Nearby was the white passenger van registered in Udon Thani and deployed on the Udon Thani-Ban Phue-Nam Som route. Its front was heavily damaged and its slide door fell out. The van belonged to Phetthawee Air Co.

Speeding, rude van driver fined for refusal to slow down

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURAT THANI: A van driver has been suspended for 30 days and fined 5,000 baht for speeding, being aggressive towards passengers and failure to use a GPS.

The van's owner was fined 50,000 baht for operating a for-charter-only van as a regular passenger service.

The provincial land transport office took action against driver Wechayan Yongbangsai after a video was posted on social media showing him travelling at 130kph on a trip from Surat Thani to Phuket province last Friday.

He also emotionally rejected foreign tourists' requests that he slow down, and even told them to get out of the van if they did not feel safe because he knew what he was doing.

He was fined for being impolite, scary driving and failure to use a global positioning system, said Teerayut Sukrat, a local land transport official.

Charnnarong Boonjui, the van owner, was fined 50,000 baht for operating a van registered only for charter services on a regular route without the appropriate a licence.
The transport officials imposed the penalties at the van terminal in Surat Thani municipality on Monday.

Woman driver drowns in flooded railway underpass

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

A 41-year-old woman drowned in her pickup truck when it stalled in a 100-metre underpass at the entrance to the luxury housing estate where she lived in Prawet district early on Thursday morning.

Her tragic fate was reported to Prawet police about 2am.

Relatives told police that she phoned for help, saying the water in the underpass, beneath railway tracks, was about a metre deep and rising. She was trying to get out of the stalled vehicle. Then the phone signal disconnected.
Relatives rushed to the underpass, only to find it was filled with water. Rescue workers dived to the truck and retrieved her body at about 5.30am.

The underpass is the back entrance to the Golden Nakara housing estate.

The woman's name was initially withheld from the media, but she was later identified as Panumas sae Tae, managing director of Optimo Thailand Co, which runs property and cosmetic businesses. She was married to a Malaysian man.

Prawet district chief Thanasit Metpanmuang said the management of the housing estate had sought permission from the State Railway of Thailand to build the underpass for the convenience of residents.

It was equipped with a pump because it was often flooded in the wet season.
On Wednesday night the pump was turned off because the pipe broke.

Shortly afterwards the woman reached the partially flooded underpass. The rapidly rising water stalled the vehicle's engine and filled the underpass before she could get out.
The underpass links the housing estate and a local road parallel to the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway.

Bus plunges into ravine in Phetchabun, 48 hurt
Published: 7/10/2018 at 04:20 PM
Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

A bus hit a pickup truck and plunged into a ravine in Phetchabun on Sunday, injuring 48 people.

Traffic Police radio reported the bus-truck accident occurred at 11am on Road 225 in Wichien Buri district of the mountainous north-central province.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Narong Noikalya of Wichien Buri police station told the INN news agency that a private bus operated by Chokkrittaporn Tour hit a pickup truck and then plunged 50 metres down a ravine at Khao Nam Orm.

At least 48 people were injured, the duty officer said, and were sent to four hospitals. There were no initial reports of fatalities.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Narong Noikalya said the brake system of the bus may have malfunctioned as it descended a hill, causing it to crash into the pickup travelling in the opposite direction.

The bus was taking passengers from Chaiyaphum to Samut Prakan for a thod pha pa ceremony. It was unclear whether the robe-offering ceremony took place in Chaiyaphum or Samut Prakan.
