Anyone know what gasohol will do to a Briggs & Stratton mower engine? Little choice now but to use it. It's on a Rover mower from Australia and maybe someone from down-under will know if B&S Australia have now adapted their engines for it? Pete :cheers:

It won`t bother the engine as in mechanical problems, Pete. The problem is just some components in the fuel system, especially carburettors, fuel lines, etc. As such a machine is not used every day I would keep the fuel level low while in use, drain the tank just by tipping the machine over, and then start the engine and let it run dry on what is left in the system.

You could probably get a specific answer from B&S in Oz if you were to email them. :cheers:

Thanks Nereus. It's used every 10 days or so and about 1 3/4 tank fulls are used each time. I guess it won't hurt to add a splash of additive from time to time to try to help keep the carb clean. I found below on the B&S site. I don't know however what % is in Thai fuel? Pete :cheers:

- A minimum of 87 octane/ 87 AKI (91 RON). High altitude use, see below.

- Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), is acceptable.

Pete, Thai gasohol 95 octane is supposedly 10% alcohol (ethanol or whatever kind they use here) and 90% gasoline (or benzine here), but this is Thailand so who knows for sure.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Yes, it is 10% ethanol. E20 is 20%. The higher octane (95) on a small engine will be hardly noticeable.
What additive are you referring to Pete?

It is many years since I have used B&S engines, and I am not up with just what types of fuel systems they may now use. With simple carburetor systems on small engines there is not a great deal to go wrong with them, but they may well be now using some form of fuel injection. Any petrol fuel system "cleaner" additive will not do any harm in my experience.

If draining the system is a bit too much to ask, the fuel tank "should" have a small valve / tap fitted at the outlet. It is good practice to stop the engine after the job is finished by turning off the valve and allowing the remaining fuel in the system to burn off. The ethanol tends to settle out if not being used, and can aggravate any tendency to clog up the system. Keep the level in the tank about enough for one use, and do not stock much fuel to try and help keep it "fresh". :cheers:

I'm confused... Is 91 now supposed to be unavailable? I've had no problems finding it at any pump I've been to??

91 red is unavailable, not 91 green which is gasohol.

Out of the 20 odd different gas stations I've been to in the last month or so only one had it, and that was the Esso near the lights in Hua Hin. The queue of bikes waiting for a fill was looooong ....

Those guys on the beach have the same problem getting horse food from a service station as well; time doesn't stand still!

Incidentally, why do they make a Honda CBR150R gasahol compatible but not the 250R?

The 250 CBR does run on gasohol though the fuel consumption isnt as good - its also best not to leave any in it for long periods for the reasons mentioned above.

I tend to do one fill gasohol to one fill Super 95 now that 91 has gone.

Having always uses benzene 91 in my Yamaha Nouvo Elegance, I switched to gasohol 91 when the benzene disappeared. After several tank fulls I noticed while idling the engine sounded about to conk out and duly did yesterday while my girlfriend was driving.

Was sure my petrol cap said gasohol 91 could be used and looked closer. It says "benzene or gasohol (E10)" on a green sticker with a big "91" on it. I took this to mean the green pump of gasohol 91 (as it's E10) would be ok. Obviously not.

The Yamaha garage says use gasohol 95 (orange), which is 90% benzene but higher octane than gasohol 91.

I read that gasohol soaks up moister from the air so it could cause a layer of water to build up causing some problems getting/keeping the engine running. Not sure I should use at all then!

Anybody using benzene 95 (the yellow one) in their motorbike?

Yep, last fill was with that - noticeable improvement in performance and fuel consumption. Also noticeably more notes going out of my wallet for it!

Hmm. The pump next to the new Tesco, where I used to live, has only had red for quite some time. I think they stopped selling green about October time. Went there the other week, and they had red.

Topped up yesterday at a different pump. Have to say I can't remember the colour of the pump, just asked for 91. I think it was probably green though.
