Quality of Milford and Tanarat Golf courses

Post by expat71NL »

I have played most of the courses round Hua Hin (Banyan, Black Mountain, Palm Hills, Imperial Lake View, Majestic Creek, Springfield & Royal Hua Hin). Of these only the first two can be called "top" courses. The condition of Royal Hua Hin can only be described as very poor. The rest of the courses are OK. There are other courses around Hua Hin that I have not played (e.g. Milford, Tanarat, a course near Cha am, several courses an hours drive away). Can anyone tell me if these courses are worth playing?

If on your scale you consider Springfield as only OK you are going to be very disappointed by Milford and Fort Dhanarat.

It seems that by quality you mean 'condition', and therefore you will be seriously disappointed with Milford and Dhanarat.

Royal Ratchaburi is worth a visit and the ''c'' course at Kaeng Krachan is an excellent test.

I do have a spirit of adventure so I am willing to try anything and I will. Problem here is that I arrange the tee-off times for friends and would like to know what to expect from these courses so as not to make enemies. I will not be in Hua Hin until the end of October and have to arrange a golf itinery long before then. How long is the drive to the recommended courses?

i played Milford last wk and holes 11-18 are fantasticv, with amazing views of the ocean. however, the conditions are very questionable, with some greens being more sand than grass, so don't expect much. but, as i said, the views of the ocean are amazing, and the character of the holes is really fun. if the conditions could be approved, it would be a super course, but poor conditions take the positive away.

here's a great overnight trip - go to Ratchabiri and play an afternoon rd at Royal, get a decent hotel room for about 600B, then play Dragon Hills on the way back to HH the next morning. DH is one of the best layouts I've played; almost every hole is memorable, and the conditions are quite good, esp the greens which roll fast and true.

I havn't played Royal Ratchaburi for a long time but hear it's still in great condition.
Totally agree about Dragon Hills and here's a link to their promotional days that run until the end of October:

Played Milford earlier in the year and if I remember rightly it was being promoted at 1,100 THB for green fee, caddie and cart (2 sharing). They seemed to be working on the front 9, but the back was in pretty rotten condition. I just placed the ball on the fairways.
Havn't been to Tannarat for years.

My advice is stick to the first two "quality courses"
If you do play Royal Hua Hin I suggest you pick up your ball ,clean it, place it on a big juicy tee and then fire it into the trees again.
Hope you and your mates have a great time

Hi Agree with the gent who mentioned the great views at Milford, and the need to spruce up the condition. |It is better than it was 5 years ago, the greens are pretty good, and some are very difficult due to a lot of contour combined with generally fast speed. It is a fairly short course, so I guess tough greens is one way to make it more difficult. I would skip Ft. Tanarat, it was somewhere to swing a club a few years back when the green fee was 180 baht, but they hiked it to 600 (maybe more now) and did little to improve the quality or condition of the course.

Kang Krechan (about 1 hr 15 min drive once you know the way) has 27 holes, and as mentioned the new Jack Nicklaus designed 9 is in fantastic shape, and a good track, not to berate the other 2 nines which are mature, and good fun, no enemies to be made there me thinks.

Royal Racthaburi and Dragon Hills should be on your list for sure, as the are both great courses and very easy on the pocketbook year round, RR around 600 gf, and DH less than 600 :D don't be fooled by the prices as they are quality golf experiences. I have done the exact trip suggested by one of the other posts here, and it is a great 2 day golf experience.

THIS NEXT SITE, IS IN KOREAN, BUT HAS HOLE MAPPING AND PICTURES OF EACH HOLE....

Forget Sawang further towards Bangkok, it used to be a great course, but lack of conditioning has turned it back to horse pasture quality. (As of last February)

@expat71nl
remember that in November , most courses should have had enough rain and conditions of all courses are WAY better then lets say in April.
Springfield's fairways were brown and yellow in April, last week in August they were green again and maintenace was still done to prepare for the January Asia Tour Qialifying school finals.
other courses have similar problems due to little rainfall last rain season.
