I am not a caddie, but all of my friends are. They all work very hard and get up really early. They have bills just like everybody else and responsibilities at home. I personally think that one should think before they make a joke about someone else. You should be thankful that they put up with your cussing on the green and tantrums that you probably wouldn't dare do at home. When you go to a restaurant you need a waiter. Nobody goes in the kitchen and gets there own meals to the table do they. Waiters are tipped because that is their service. If you want to go play golf and have no cady just to save a few pennies then maybe you should be playing in your backyard and have your dog fetch the ball, that way you only need one golf ball. Caddies should get a raise...don't start me on the jokes caddies have on tourist...they can be really funny.

Unfortunately the Thais have inherited the Yankie system of being paid a base level by dodgy employers and have to rely on tips to keep them alive! In the first instance they should be paid a fair wage BEFORE their duties and exceptional service prompts the player to lay out some of their readies! I was under the impression that a part of the fees paid up front included monies for the caddies anyway.
So what is the true daily wage averaged out for slow days then? I expect we will never know as no one pays tax!

Great post apinansukpeng, which golf course do you work at?
Re: Normal tip for caddie in Hua Hin ?
My view is that a good caddy deserves a decent tip.....a pish poor one deserves re training.
My caddies usually have a longer walk though
All I ask is that they keep an eye on the ball as it fades wildly and keeps quiet when I am addressing the ball.
I didn't care for the sign in the pro shop at Springfield indicating what the "expected gratuity" is(300bahtski)

By the way call me Nick. I teach special needs children and am a nurse. I have been doing volunteer work for the past three years here in Hua Hin. If you need help with the gardening or any thing else just give me a call.

For me the caddie is an asset and a crucial part of the golfing experience in Thailand. As is walking the course. In Dubai we have to take buggies and we cannot get caddies. Having four hours walking in the sun bantering with your mates accompanied by a smiling Thai lady is a great day out, and it is my pleasure to reward her patience with a tip at the end. Last week I had my share of good and useless caddies, but I still enjoyed the experience with them all. Some of you lot are real tightwads and need to loosen up a bit.

Any update on the tipping for caddies?
Heard that courses increased caddy prices, so do they expect higher tips as well?
How much are you tipping on average?

Tuppenece
Nothing at all to do with being a tightwad, why compensate a poor caddy with the same tip you would give to an excellent caddy?
Seasides...I think the expected tip now is in the region of 300 baht

I believe the caddies are getting the extra 50 baht, so they get 250 of the 300. I don't think that means that you should tip them more.
Interesting post apinansukpeng! You sound like you aren't aware that the vast majority of the world plays golf without a caddie and does just fine! I think it is about a 50/50 split here between those that want a caddie and those that don't. Personally, I prefer to not have one because they can't keep up with my walking speed and I always have to wait for them. I usually remember to take the next club I need but sometimes forget and then have to wait. The first golf course that offers optional caddies here will boost their business a lot. The more the caddie fee and expected tip goes up, the more appealing optional caddies will be.

Re: Normal tip for caddie in Hua Hin ?
Tip should be 300 minimum, they deserve it 1 million per cent!
Re: Normal tip for caddie in Hua Hin ?
Pretty sure the caddies dont get the extra 50 baht... they maybe get half - 50 bloody pence or a bar of chocolate!
The caddies deserve a medal IMO - and you complain about giving them 300 baht, come on guys - 5 hrs trying to help useless golfers get around a golf course - blaming them for every bad shot... come on you know u do it... every putt missed is a bad line from the caddie.... never a bad stroke. Every short iron shot is a bad yardage, never a craply struck shot and that water hazard they didnt tell u about... do i need say anymore. I reckon that those out there who dont want to pay for a caddie are exactly the sort the caddies would rather not have to caddie for.
