Post by efi008 »

I know there is a driving range. Does anyone know if there are also golf instructors.
What is the best driving range?

There are lots of driving ranges and lots of instructors. By all accounts I can gather a guy named John Withers is the best instructor in town and currently teaches out of the driving range up on the Palau Road near the Elephant camps. That is also a very good range with a very good Thai Restaurant on the grounds.

Other ranges from south to north:

One on the highway just before you get to Pranburi.
One in the Suan Song Army camp just south of Takiab.
One on the canal road at the south end called Pi Mai.
One on Petchkasem road out towards the airport end of town in a big sports complex.

Most of the courses have ranges as well.

What are the costs involved - for use of range and for golf instruction?

Between 20 and 50 Baht per tray of Balls depending on which range. Some also have better quality balls which are more expensive. Usually the balls are cheaper if you buy a number of trays or a book of tickets.

Thai pro's charge around B500 per hour not sure what the Farang pro's charge.

John Wither is definitely your man for instruction and he teaches at the Monkol range which is on the Pala U road as hhfarang has said.
As he also mentioned, the courses themselves have practice facilities and Black Mountain stands out in as much as you can hit balls off grass rather than mats for a small extra fee. The putting and chipping facilities are also excellent.
If you're in the centre of town and don't fancy traveling, then the facilities at Royal Hua Hin are OK. The mats are reasonable but the balls are not so good. However it does have a decent practice putting green which is kept in good order.

According to my neighbor, John Withers charges 600b for 30 minutes, but he says it is well worth the price.

I found the caddies to be very experienced and willing to help me for free - especially at Majestic. They are in a different league from Bangkok area caddies.
