Never heard of the nocturnal wasps/hornets. My uncle used to get a can of hair spray and a lighter, kick at the nest and the rest was history. Mean bastard he was this always worked.

Bamboo Grove wrote: Today I was barbequeing and they started to fly around and then I remembered something I had recently read. Make a trap for them. Put something sweet in a glass and mix it with water (I used honey and sugar) then add some beer (I was crying when I did that) and dish deteargent (this will cause the surface tension to dissappear so they will first get drunk and then fall into the liquid and drown) and leave it on your courtyard. Voila...two hours later, I've butchered 7 of them nasties. Genocide in the making. :D
My mother used to male similar traps when I was a kid playing in the garden back in the sixties. She'd put a spoonful of jam dissolved in some hot water in the bottom of an old jam jar and then stretch a piece of greaseproof paper over the top with an elastic band and make a hole in the middle large enough for a wasp to get in. The wasps go in for the jam and then end up getting stuck in it while buzzing around trying to find the hole to get out.

Almost 20 new victims recorded today. Another good thing is that no bumble bees have been victims of this concoction. These little things are not aggressive and there's plenty of them around my little garden now as they all seem to be attracted to mugwort, melissa and mint that are blooming now.
