Scientists just discovered a new continent...

Post by hhfarang »

"Fun fact: Scientists just discovered a new continent. Yes, we said a new continent, and we are just as confused as you are.

While it sounds crazy that we could’ve missed a continent all this time, it’s true. The good news is, we now know where it is. And we can get to the bottom of where it’s been all this time.

According to Time, the continent lies under the waters of the Indian Ocean. It’s actually located beneath the small island nation of Mauritius, which is only 790 square miles big!

Apparently, Mauritius has always been on geologists’ radar because of its strong gravitational pull. It sits atop a “mascon,” a mass concentration of gravity caused by plate tectonics. ..."

Wow does that mean Mauritius actually owns a whole continent?

After Gondwanaland broke up, a couple hundred million years later some of the chunks remained above sea level and some had disappeared under the oceans. Humans named some of the dry chunks 'Continents'. The wet chunks have a scientific name, but clickbait writers say 'NEW CONTINENT!'

Evidently these scientists don't communicate with each other. If the one above is a continent it would be 8 and the one here would be number 9...

"There’s An Eighth Continent That’s Been Hiding From Us This Whole Time

Apparently there’s an eighth continent in the southwest Pacific.

A huge landmass, mostly submerged beneath the ocean, bears all the hallmarks of a continent, according to a new study published by the Geological Society of America. You may have heard of part of it: New Zealand.

They call the continent Zealandia. At nearly 1.9 million square miles, it seems massive, but it’s two-thirds the size of the world’s (current) smallest continent, Australia. Ninety-four percent of Zealandia is underwater, with most of the other 6 percent being New Zealand. But it’s what’s beneath the surface that counts, right? ..."
