Philippine Island to close to tourism.

Post by Khundon1975 »

President Duterte, has proclaimed that he is closing the highly popular island of Boracay to all tourists for six months, due to the serious issues with sewage and litter being pumped into the sea.
There are around 30,000 residents on the island, who work in the tourism industry.
The president has said he will give financial support to the locals, but not to the rich resort owners. 🤔 Wether he does, remains to be seen.

Six months is a long time, for small business owners to go without an income.

Kudos to Duterte for keeping his word. He gave the island authorities plenty of warning, threatened to close the island if they did not clean-up the place. Islanders ignored and therefore got shut-down....
Lessons-learnt the hard way.

Edit: I visited Boracay several years ago and it was the most beautiful beach I'd ever seen. Haven't seen anything as nice since..

Actually Duterte has promised $40m financial aid to locals to help during the closed period. Many will also get work on the upgrade works to be performed.

Has Thailand government offered any aid for the places they are closing?
The world needs to wake up and simply ban certain products which are destroying our world.

Sounds like the island actually has to be shut-down in order for the improvements to be carried out anyway....
