Hua Hin airport to be expanded to accommodate larger aircraft

Post by buksida »

The Transport Ministry plans to improve and expand the runway of Hua Hin airport so that it can handle larger aircraft.

The plan aimed at promoting international tourism to this famous seaside resort town not far from Bangkok.

The plan was disclosed yesterday as the transport minister Mr Arkhom Termpittayapaisith visited the airport on his inspection trip.

He ordered that a plan to develop the airport be created to improve the capability of this comparatively underutilized air terminal.

At present, only one carrier operates from the airport and other than that it is primarily used as a base for the Civil Aviation Training Center.

He said Hua Hin airport is actually well equipped with a 35-meter wide 2,100-meter long runway which can support Boeing 737 aircraft.

It has strong potential for development and improvements as its capabilities could facilitate aircraft even larger in size.

This will then attract even more carriers which in turn will dramatically improve tourism in and around Hua Hin, he said.

Furthermore, should the improvements meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards then its potential will increase exponentially.

He then assigned the Department of Airports the responsibility of expanding the width of the runway from 35 to 45 meters as a mean to promote international tourism to this seaside resort.

At present 80% of tourists to Hua Hin are Thais, and 20% foreign tourists from Europe.

From my understanding, there's been plenty of past and failed "projects" for airlines flying into and out of HH. Also the fact that the flight path goes directly over the King's Residence has been somewhat of a problem.....

Erm, no. The Palace is an excluded zone. The main runway is virtually one way, as take off to the south involves an immediate left turn to avoid the exclusion zone, and landing from the south is only permitted if the aircraft can approach and land by doing a close right hand downwind circuit, such as a light aircraft or helicopter.

Kan Airlines is currently operating out of Hua Hin but only servicing flights from and to Chiang Mai. http://www.kanairlines.com/

As somebody who depends in part on tourists for my business, I would love to see the airport get used more often.

However, I really don't see the market for the airport unless it's for say golf charters and the like. It's too close to Bangkok to be efficiently used as a BKK - HH - BKK means of transport, so I don't see how it WILL work.

Commuting from BKK is too easy by road and if EVER the so called High Speed Train comes to town then that would also kill it.

It's a shame as it is a great facility for the town but I can only see contued failure for it......... :banghead:

As I remember, some years ago, Hua Hin Airport got International Status one month after closing commercially.

OK, fair enough - could have sworn I'd read something on the Forum or elsewhere, but certainly do not have the facts to argue the case. Aside from the Palace is there another residence in HH (or nearby) which perhaps I'm getting confused with?

I've seen people say that on here as well pharvey, but whenever I've used the airport, the plane hasn't gone anywhere near the palace.

This may help. You can see the runway and the direction. Pete

The airport was upgraded, but never certified as International. What I find confusing is the proposal to widen the runway. This would be one hell of a job, bearing in mind part of the runway is over both the railway and Petchkasem Rd. For what advantage? The length is already enough for 737 size aircraft, and probably bigger. I suppose, as this is TIT, the plan is to land A380 aircraft full of European passengers!
The Palace is 4 Km from where the runway ends at the sea.
