Rip off ATMs at airports

Post by uncle tom »

During my travels since my last trip to the LoS I have noticed the sudden appearance of rip-off ATMs at airports.

Essentially what is happening is that the regular bank ATMs are getting removed from the arrival facilities at airports to be replaced by 'specialist' ones that offer a really lousy exchange rate - one I found in Portugal charged more than £1 for a euro.

- Has this scam reached BKK yet?

Certainly the ATMs from the main banks are hard to find, I have an account with Bangkok Bank and all theirs are actually outside where you get the bus or taxi.

Interesting (I also use BB) - in the absence of a 'proper' ATM at BKK I was toying with the idea of getting my first tranche of Baht from these people:

www.thecurrencyclub.co.uk

- But have never used this type of service before..

Not quite.. - TransferWise (I use SAT Worldwide..) looks like one of the outfits that moves money from your home A/C into your Thai one without taking the sort of cut the banks rake off.

CurrencyClub delivers actual currency to your home address before you depart - but I've not tried this before..

Just as you go out the door for the bus to Hua Hin, there's a Bangkok Bank ATM to your right facing towards the road.
