Petch Hua Hin - that sounds a bit better than the suggestion I read yesterday i.e. Hua Hina Diamond.

Yes Mr. Srettha, many of us want it, but it never happens.

I wonder if the PM owns properties next to Palm Hills Golf Club which will have to be demolished if the runway length is extended to 2.2 miles. Easy to check on Google Maps - I'll bet they haven't!

Not sure why anyone thinks the runway needs to be extended. It is now 2000m long (extended about 20 years ago when flight plans to Hong Kong and Singapore were submitted - that is why there was the overseas flights terminal upstairs and posters of Singapore, Hong Kong etc down stairs).

That is long enough for most A320 or 737. Both of which can easily get to HK (1800km). or SGP or even further. Range of a 180 seat 737-800 is over 3,000 miles (5,000 km).

HH is never going to get anything bigger. Doesn't need it. The size of terminal, apron etc etc to handle multiple 777's would require knocking down everything and starting again.

If really required, there is probably 300-350m of space that could be used for runway extension before reaching palm hills houses. Might reduce house prices on the east side of the course !

Perhaps the govt and local authority should prioritise water first before encouraging more people to come here.

I no longer have anything to do with the place, but I believe that the width was the problem, which has also been retified. There was also some talk about the apron strength, which may not have been upgraded.

^The other major problem is that Suvarnabhumi is comparatively near. It's hard to be successful with an airport that's only a three hour drive away from a large established one.

But they cater for completely different markets so I’m sure that’s not the stumbling block. One of the biggest challenges is that there may not be enough customers wanting to visit Hua Hin or those living in the area wanting to fly to the available destinations. From what has been said, KL was fairly popular but I doubt it would support say half a dozen similar destinations?

Is there any reason why planes cannot take-off or land over the sea now or in the future?

If you are interested the following may help:

http://www.thaiflyingclub.com/linkairporthuahin.html

Caution: His Majesty The King's Palace is off the end of Runway 16. It is prohibited to fly over the palace. It is not marked on the maps, and it is not easily known about this regulation, but it is a very sensitive area that you must not fly over. It is approximately 4 km from the end of the runway on the coast.

Ezy Airlines has announced its ambitious plans to expand air travel to and from Hua Hin and across southern Thailand.

The airline held a press conference on May 24 at the Colonial Hall, Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, to unveil its first aircraft and outline its vision for enhancing connectivity in the region.

The event marked a significant milestone for the airline, which aims to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025.

No mention of flying to or from Hua Hin airport here, looks like conflicting reports.

EZY AIRLINES EXPANDS INTO NEW MARKETS IN SOUTHERN THAILAND

If Ezy Airlines obtains the Air Operator’s License (AOL) and Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), it will operate charter flights and use Hat Yai International Airport in Songkhla as its hub from October 2024. Initial routes include Hat Yai to Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Betong and Narathiwat, with fares for the Hat Yai – Betong route ranging from 1,900 to 2,500 baht per seat.

...

Chatchwee said that when the airline service opens from Hat Yai International Airport in Songkhla Province, it will fly directly to Betong. After that, it will expand to cover the entire southern region, focusing on secondary city airports such as Ranong, Krabi, Phang Nga, Trang, and Narathiwat, to connect travel between them and help shorten travel time and expenses for people in the South.

I've seen several reports - some include Hua Hin in the flight list, while others don't. Based down South, I think they are talking 30 minutes flight time. I would imagine that Hua Hin would be pushing their 30 minute flight window. At the end of the day, they haven't even be granted a licence yet.

Even though the PM has given his backing, I wonder if this is just another Hua Hin Airport tease.
