Pattaya-Cha-am-Hua Hin ferry project revived
The Marine Department has been ordered to make a development study of a revived proposal for a ferry service across the Gulf linking Pattaya with Cha-am and Hua Hin.
Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said a fery service would stimulate tourism, the economy and trade between the east and west coasts of the Gulf of Thailand, shortening travel time to about three hours from the current six to seven hours.
He said the project had been under study since 2012 and was stalled. The National Council for Peace and Order had revived the plan. It was expected the new study would be completed by mid-2016.
The four-year investment plan from 2016 would cost an estimated four billion baht to carry up to three million people and 220,000 vehicles a year.
The first-phase investment would be the construction of the port, buildings and berths, then the service should be available from 2017.
Mr Prajin said three routes would be offered in the first stage -- Pattaya in Chon Buri to Hua Hin and Pranburi in Prachuap Khiri Khan; Bang Pu in Samut Prakan to Hua Hin and Pranburi; and Bang Pu to Pattaya.
The plan was to later extend the service to between Bang Pu and Koh Chang in Trat, 146 nautical miles; Bang Pu and Koh Samui, 240 miles; and Bang Pu to Songkhla 380 miles.
He said the plan involved the use of catamaran ferries that travel at up to 82 kilometres per hour and can carry 450 passengers and 33 vehicles per trip.

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
Big Boy has the right thinking here...many of us are thinking of small boats, what if the vessel to be used was a Ro-ro
type ship..of a decent size..?
To be able to take your own vehicle with you to Patts would be a big bonus..comfey chairs & good food would be another.
(Plus a larger craft would ride that 'swell' better).

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
April 17,2015 [PattayaDailyNews]; ACM.Prajin Chantong-minister of transportation- revealed that he had ordered the marine department to look into the construction of 3 new ferry ports which will connect the East and the West. They intend to construct the new ports at 3 different landmarks which are Pattaya, Cha-Am and Huahin. In addition, it’s expected that it will reduce travelling time from 6-7 hours to only 3 hours.
The Marine Department had been making plans for the new ports since 2012 and it’s expected that the construction will be finished by the middle of 2016. Private sectors have already invested in the 4 year project and will need around 400,000 million baht budget to complete. A Catamaran style Ferry which can carry 450 passengers and 33 cars and can travel at 82 kph will be used.
The proposed routes are:
1.Pattaya-HuaHin-Pran Buri
2.BangPhu-Huahin-Pran Buri
3.Bangphu-Pattaya
The proposed additional routes are:
1.BangPhu-KoChang
2. BangPhu-Samui island
3. BangPhu—Song Kla (380 miles)
It’s expected that 3 million people and 200,000 vehicles will use the service every year.

^ True (most of the time..!), but I for one would rather the trip by ferry, enjoying a nice spot of lunch, a couple of beers and the fresh air!!

It used to take a lot longer before that southern ring road and bridge was opened. In those days you had go into Bangkok from the south and out on the east and all the traffic that involved. I forget what year the ring and bridge opened? Pete

the gulf has these long periods of wind waves. like today. white caps and about a 10 second period on the swells. Ever been INSIDE a boat for three hours rocking back and forth and up and down?

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
I can't imagine there being anything like enough trade to justify the cost of building a new port and buying a fleet of large ferries. Even if the junta decides it's a good idea, it would take some years to build the infrastructure and it would probably be cancelled by a later government trying to balance the budget.
Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
The way I read it, is somebody has a few spare ferries lying around, and their mates are looking for a way to put them into service. To know specifics like the vehicle capacity will be exactly 33 is very strange at the feasibility stage.

Re: Govt plans Pattaya, Cha-am ferry link
If they are being loose concerning a definition of where Pattaya is, the boat could berth at Laem Chabang port where more than adequate people/vehicle - loading/unloading facilities already exist. 30 minute drive from there into Pattaya central.
Sattahip 30 minutes south of Pattaya could also handle car ferries at the Thai Naval facilities there.... IMO...but not sure about existing roll on - roll off capabilities. Pete

It is being reported today that; Bali Hai pier and Ocean Marina might be chosen as the site for the ferry pier in Pattaya and the Puektian Beach in Petchaburi might be selected for the ferry pier for Cha-am and Hua Hin.
