"saying No" !! to Thais.....
Re: "saying No" !! to Thais.....
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

The real trick is saying no to your Thai wife that is way harder IMHO..
One word is not a story but it is the beginning and end of one.

At the moment down Binta-Soi at night there is a Thai lady trawling the bars asking for 'Flood-Donations'.
Now at this point I'm not contesting her authenticity, but when myself or any other Farang politely says
"No thanks"..she does not move, the brochure in her hand is still outstretch & in your face..
..OK, we'll try "Mai-ow korp-khun-kaap" No,she's persistant.
It takes me to almost growl "MAI...OWW" before she smiles and says "korp-kun-kaa" in an almost pi**-taking tone and drifts off. (Am I the only one who sees this??)
Normally a polite "Mai-Ow, korp-kun-kaaap",plus a smile gets the message across with no loss of face and the Thai often remembering you for this.. :-)

I would question her authenticity, and get a Thai friend or wife to grill her for a few minutes and see what transpires. There are far too many scams here where people latch on to a cause and milk it to stuff their own pockets. Pete

Two words I use quite frequently and Thais do not like them are 'maybe' and 'tomorrow'

Re: "saying No" !! to Thais.....
I recently went away for a few days and the missus asked if her friend could come with us, I said OK but she pays her own way. OK,OK
So I book/pay for the ticket'.
After we get back, still no money forthcoming for the ticket so I ask missus to have a word with friend and get the money. She comes back with "she no have money"
I tell her that I will go and see the friend personally and make my feelings quite clear, missus horrified at this because it makes her look bad to her friend. She pleads and eventually persudes me to leave it to her. I reluctantly do so and the good outcome is that I eventually got the money.
Next time its a definate NO unless the money is up front !

Having said that I have lent money to Thais I have know a long time. Not big money. Enough to pay for motor repairs, trip to BK, feed the family etc and always got it back promptly and with a beer or a little interest

I watch if the person also approaches local Thais and see their reaction, I reckon that if they give its probably genuine.prcscct wrote:I would question her authenticity, and get a Thai friend or wife to grill her for a few minutes and see what transpires. Although I admit to getting thoroughly pissed off with the Thai 'singers' who stand in your face until you give them money (or am I just being uncharitable ?)

I've noticed this too... especially with my wife. I'm not sure exactly why, but it seems there is a greater need for immediate satisfaction or resolution. It seems Thais would much rather hear a 'no' than a maybe or tomorrow.richard wrote:Two words I use quite frequently and Thais do not like them are 'maybe' and 'tomorrow'
