When nosy expats ask how can i live here without working, i reply, 'well, while you worked hard for 50 years, i worked smart for 5 years'

How much I enjoyed rainy season here - nice and cool and still able to play golf most days.

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Source
Re: Things that really shocked you about Thailand
The lack of concern for the enviroment and how inward thinking the Thai are in worldly views so show very little concern for issues outside of their borders.. How a lie is not a lie. How corruption is part of everyday life. The difference in rules between locals and Thai be that prices to rules of Legal/lawful issues. Hmm must be more.

The fact that every Thai just HAS to answer their phone when it rings!
* Woman on motorcycle with 3 kids, bags of shopping, wok & a gas-bottle approaching a busy road junction..
..'Ring-Ring'.. "Allorr"
* Car/bus/tuk-tuk/truck -driver negotiating a right turn at busy junction..(1 handed) 'Ring-ring'.."allorr..err, chai,chai"
* Woman at the checkout, Electric company employee up the ladder re-connecting the live power, your wife while having sex with you!..they CANNOT leave it to ring off!

Re: Things that really shocked you about Thailand
Fascination of deviations
I've noticed some thai friends fairly often share pictures on Facebook showing victims of traffic accidents, molested crime victims, dying people in hospital beds, deformed babies, children and adults, disabled or crippled people.
Thai TV is running comedy shows with some actors getting laughed at due to their looks and freaky behaviour touching disability humor*, as well as showing very violent movie trailers in the afternoon.
It's seems some Thais are, if not obsessed, but not hesitating showing deviant body shapes as well as victims of cruelty.
Am I wrong, is it typical Thai, asian or what and why?
Any reflections from the Forum?
*maybe not the right expression, try "blemish comedy" or "humour based on people's disabilities"

JL: No, you're not wrong (in my opinion anyway). I've noticed the same thing, and it's quite disturbing at times.
I have a Thai friend who often posts articles about a person or animal complete with quite graphic photos. They appear in my newsfeed bit, and I have to delete them straight away because the photos are too graphic and upset me. Thais generally, I think, are less politically correct than the west (which I think has gone a bit too far the other way), and seem to have a much stronger stomach than me as far as graphic images are concerned.
I can't answer the question why, but it's something that I've also been pondering for a while.

I have a French friend who is an animal rights supporter. I agree with all her help, sympathise with the cause. Sometimes I am bombarded with horrific pictures of maimed or abused animals. I cannot look at any of them as I find it too distressing.Vital Spark wrote:JL: No, you're not wrong (in my opinion anyway). I've noticed the same thing, and it's quite disturbing at times.

Re: Things that really shocked you about Thailand
It shocked me early on and continues to do so. I'm talking about overt racism. A couple of recent examples, I only recently discovered that only farrangs have to pay the property tax on their first home here. But the one that really got to me was when we were getting a taxi down from BKK, price agreed, all good untill the driver spoke to my wife in Thai. She is Malaysian Chinese and explained she cant speak Thai. The driver said "you have face same same Thai but you farrang". Refused to go any further unless we agreed to pay an extra 1000 B . We found another taxi.
Re: Things that really shocked you about Thailand
the amount of big fat gut farang men riding their byke/scooter half naked trough town feeling very proud of themselves really gets up my nose!!
they would not do it in their home country so why be disrespectful here ?
