Lottery prize and keeping it a secret or not?

Post by huahin4ever »

I have just won some money in a lottery. Approx. 17 mill baht. No one knows as of now, except my mother, sister and brother. I guess my question would be, should I tell my Thai wife? She's my wife for 10 years, we have a very good relationship and she has everything she needs. As far as I know no problems whatsoever.

In my opinion she doesn't need to know

Looking forward to see what replies I get on this one?

Personally, I'd share the news with my wife. However, a totally hypothetical question as I'd never waste money on the lottery.

[Edit] Congratulations by the way

The lottery is in another country where these prizes are tax free  I just wrote 17 mill baht which is the approx. amount converted from my local home country currency.

You say you've been married for 10 years and have a very good relationship, but then you are considering holding back from your wife about your lottery win - if the relationship is good, why wouldn't you tell her?

I think you have to go with your gut feeling. If you don't want to tell her then so be it.

If the money is not in Thailand then ideal.

Less people you tell the better.

I definitely would not tell my Long term Thai Girlfriend but each to their own!

Enjoy!

Mother, brother, sister--you've told too many people already.

Just wait for the "begging" letters to arrive :P Now the cat is out of the bag, so to speak!
I think if my husband kept that kind of secret, I would not be his wife for very long after should I find out!
Anyway...just going to compose my letter lol!

There is the old joke

Man walks in the house and says to wife "I just won the lottery, pack your bags"
Wife, "Oh my god! Wow what should I pack? Beach clothes, skiing clothes, what?"
Man, "I don't care, just pack your bags and get out, I just won the lottery"
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

huahin4ever.

Mate don't listen to the people that say wife for 10 years etc should know. Money changes everything and anyone.
Thai people especially. Keep it to your self and keep it off shore. Term deposits are good and pay you 3 monthly.
Have fun on the interest, and you will always have your capital and it will be yours.

Tell her, but tell her it is staying abroad for emergency. I would assume you have other assets there also. treat them the same. You can and should enjoy your money in a wise manner. She will indirectly benefit from it. Unless this changes your "status" it should not change things. What I mean is, if 17 million Baht takes you out of the poorhouse, then that is different. If you were never in the poorhouse, then nothing changes. It is nice, but not that much money. It can be gone in no time at all. (I am not recommending that but it is easy to piss away "found money.")
Enjoy your life. You never know how long you have!

PS: My Mother's cow is sick and it needs an operation. Can I "borrow" 1 million Baht for the operation????
:P :naughty:
