Plans afoot to curb plastic bag waste

"The government, private sector and NGOs are discussing plans to levy a charge on the use of plastic carrier bags because of concerns about their negative environmental impact.

Research by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) showed that around 50% of Thais surveyed were willing to pay a fee for using plastic bags in department and convenience stores.

In their survey of 2,000 people nationwide, 88% of people said they were aware that plastic consumption affects global warming and 78% backed a complete ban on plastic bags."...............

It always amazez me where they dig up statistics.

The research also showed that Thais aged between 15-65 years old who comprise around 47 million people of the total population use approximately three plastic bags a week.

3 bags a week, I guess they only surveyed people living in the bush.

People, both Thais and Farangs, manage to shop at Makro with no trouble. That being the case, banning them completely shouldn't be a problem as people would adjust.

California has started charging for them to strongly encourage people to bring their own. It was a bit of a hassle after being away for so long to remember them, finally stuck a bunch of our bags in the car trunk. Still had to go back to the car to get them on occasion, but had no problems

The plastic shopping bags are a problem, no doubt. But an even bigger problem is all the other items that get stuffed into a plastic bag, or wrapped up in the crap. My biggest gripe is the overuse of shrink wrap. It is wrapped around just about everything edible! And then there is the ready to eat and drink containers! Making consumers pay for shopping bags is not going to stop any of the other uses of plastic containers.

Quite the opposite I'd imagine. They'll think they've bought the right to dump it anywhere.

There are a couple of threads about plastic bags, mods please move if not the right thread:
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
War set to be waged on plastic

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... on-plastic

Thailand is looking to ban the use of very thin single-use plastic bags in 2022, followed by single-use plastic glasses and straws three years later, according to plans drafted by the Pollution Control Department.

It is also looking to reduce the use of thicker plastic bags, such as those given out by department stores, by 70% over the next 20 years and ban plastic bottle tops and toxic chemicals found in plastics used for food containers.

The measures are part of efforts to curb the increasing use of throw-away plastic and hopefully reduce the dumping of plastic waste into the sea.

They also form part of an action plan drafted by a sub-committee on plastic waste management chaired by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's permanent secretary covering 2018- 2037.

Wijarn Simachaya, the permanent secretary, said the panel gives a clear direction on how to reduce plastic consumption in the country, especially single-use plastic bags.

It is estimated that the country produces 3.2 million tonnes of plastic waste per year.

"This plan is in line with the government's 20-year national strategy plan (2018-2037) for domestic plastic waste management. It is also in line with global Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030 to create a better environment," he said.

The action plan, approved by the sub-committee on Dec 25, will be forwarded to the National Environment Board before going before the cabinet.

According to the Pollution Control Department Thailand produces 4.4 billion plastic water bottles per year, 60% of which are sealed with plastic caps.

EU countries aim to introduce a total ban on throw away plastics in 2021, due to concern about critical damage to marine ecological systems caused by marine debris.

5 years to ban 'throw away' plastic!!!

20 years!!! Oh yeah, very serious about this.

They can ban smoking on the beach, close bars at a whim, ban dartboards without a licence, arrest people for the flimsiest of reasons, all in quick time. Change immigration procedures at the drop of a hat! But 20 years to reduce some plastic bags by 70%.

It's a joke!!

Maybe they are waiting until all the old Farangs pass on? Or, because of the Immigration laws, there are none left! :rasta:

We have same discussion in Germany.. and I am always wondering.

This world has Millions of Ingeneers and why nobody can find a material for to use same than all plastic bags out of a natural material, what will wrotten itsselfs after a while.

Paperbags are not an alternative.

Then every country can ban all other plastic, without any problems.

50 years ago, even in the West, we largely managed without plastic bags, so it can’t be that difficult to revert to the “old” technology?

Because now laws give you new rules, than in the past and the life-style has changed extremly.

My grandparents had not too much money for to make a big shopping tour once a week, what we are doing. Grandma went to the market with her basket and it was half full, when she came back.

When we go to Tesco, we go home with 15 plastic bags...

The water, what they drunk was coming out of the pipe. We buy plasticbottles, because a lot of poison in this water now.

Also the babies in the past had textil diapers.

Would you realy go back about 50 years?
