I have a small savings account at Thai Farmers, and although they do everything Ok it is always very busy so unless you need certain 'big bank' facilities I would go elsewhere, such as the bank just south of the Grand (used to be called the Thai Danu Bank but I think is now part of Thai Military Bank), or the Ayudha (spelling?) Bank which has recently opened branches in Hua Hin which open after 3.30pm and on weekends (shock, horror!). I believe one of their branches is next to the newish supermarket just over the railway line in the centre of town. Don't have any idea about safety deposit boxes though. You might have some luck with that at the Post Office too.

I've used Bangkok Bank since I moved here so I don't know about the others. BB has a couple of ATM machines around town, which is very convenient. They also have a machine where you can transfer money to other BB accounts. Saves you from queueing.

I held Thai Farmer Accounts (Now called Kasi Korn) and Bangkok bank accounts in Bangkok before I moved down to Hua Hin. When I setteld in HH - Thai Farmer bank wouldn't let me have an ATM card without a work permit - which I didn't have. This was 1999 do they still require this ??
So I opened an account at the Siam Commercial Bank - purely as it was the nearest to my rented house. I have found them excellent and very quick with overseas money transfers. I also have an account with Ayuddaya Bank (Private Bank) - very friendly service here.
Ayuddaya has the most ATMS in town - so if you want to save B20 (ATM fee for using another banks cash machine) without having to trek out to the Kasis Korn or Bangkok Bank this could be the one.
Bank of Ayuddaya do have safety boxes, but I would imagine all of the bigger banks do. I wouldn't leave anything of value at the post office - the post office boxes (at least mine anyway) are not very secure.
Thais will normally tell you that the Bangkok Bank is the best, but I find it tends to be crowded and less friendly.

I'd recommend you to open it in HH. If the ATM machine for some reason swallows your atm card, you'll have to go to the issuing branch to get it back. There are also other things that you'll have to do in the branch where you opened your account. Mine is Suanplu Branch in Bangkok and I've had a couple of trips to Bangers to clear some matters.
