Buying foreign currency (GBP) in Hua Hin

Post by buksida »

Anybody know the best place to buy Sterling in Hua Hin, and what the carry out limit is?

Found this which is spot on for today's rate (52.25 according to xe.com), but dont think they have a branch in HH: http://www.superrichthailand.com/

Are you sure this is the same company? The website/logo is completely different branding and their exchange rates are slightly higher.

I recall we had an exchange sponsor on here before, looks like this one might be better ...

So believe twelve victory have a booth in Market Village and also near the Hilton. I have used super rich in BKK which was an eye opening experience!!

I've mentioned this to buksida by pm, and he dismissed it as BS, which is what I did initially, and I'm still very sceptical.

I've been visiting a very old friend in Cambodia this week. He reckons the best deal around is taking your Thai Baht to a Marks & Spencer currency exchange.

As I said, both buksi and I are very sceptical, but was wondering if somebody in the UK could dismiss my friend'sstatement once and for all. He is not usually full of BS, which is why I'm asking if somebody could verify please.

Forget the above - I'm currently stuck in traffic on the Airport Bus, so I looked it up myself. M&S will sell you 1 Pound for 58.55 Thai Baht - my friend must have more money than sense. :?

Indeed, my bullshit detector is rarely wrong - that's a 12% spread they're taking!

Taking Baht to the UK is a bad idea.

Yes, I agree. That's an incredible hike, which is what I had thought it would be. I wonder if my friend saw the high rate, and thought about it meaning the opposite to what it actually was. I will ask further.

Hello Noykai, What do u mean? Please elaborate...

I am looking at buying +5.000 Euros in 100s bills only.

- What would be my best option in HH?
- Would it be worth going to a BKK changer?
- Is it possible to negotiate a special rate for a larger amount?
- Any risk of getting fake bills when dealing with a private changer such as SuperRich instead of a mainstreet commercial bank.

Appreciate any info!
Cheers

We have used 12 Victory on several occasions but the rates you get in Hua Hin are not the same as their Web site and are always a bit lower. However they are always better than the banks by a few baht.

Petrus,
Just the chaos and seeing so much money lying around in huge piles! This was at a small shop in BKK, people crushed together with bags of money. Staff running backwards and forwards in what looked like complete confusion. Amazingly it must work for them and it all add up at the end of the day.

There's a place at the end of Soi 55/1, advertising itself as a money changer. Doesn't seem to be a bank - has anybody tried it?

Dont think there is a shortage of them in HH - its just their rates vary so much and it isnt easy getting one that will give you the actual rate without a spread.

Anyone know how much foreign currency you can carry out of Thailand?

No, this place looks huge. I need to go to the ENT doctor on Soi 55/1 every 3 months, and always find myself looking at it and wondering why nobody has ever mentioned it - I assume I'm the only one who has even noticed it. It's a large building offering good rates (don't know whether actually good or bad), and certainly worth investigating. I often wonder if its a Chinese money changer that I've read about so often.

I would guess rates should be good, else it wouldn't survive.
