Back to Back Tourist Visas??

Post by pensorter »

Hello, I'm looking for thoughts /assistance on the following:
I'm currently here on a two month tourist visa.
I know I can extend it for another month, by paying I think 1900 baht at HH immigration, before expiry on 10 October.
Unfortunately something unexpected has come up, and I may need to stay here until Christmas.
Could I go to Penang, Malaysia for a week at the end of 3 months, then start again with another 2 month tourist visa?

Or I am I better off converting my Tourist visa to a one year multiple entry Non-Imm B retirement visa?
- Think I can pull of the funds & paperwork for this with a trip to my Bangkok Embassy,
but it seems a pain, as I aim to be gone by the end of the year.
Or I could go to Penang and come back on my other passport (Dual nationality, but same name)

Any Suggestions?
Guess I can also query HH immigration but what if they change their minds/!
Cheers, guys

You should be OK with getting another TV in Penang.
Certain Thai embassies/consulates don't like giving out TVs back to back but if your current visa isn't from there then I don't see any problem.
Although it might not be convenient for you, if you can show a return or onward air ticket within the validity of the new visa and are prepared to show you have money, then that'll help.
But I'm sure you'll be fine.
As a PS, The Non Imm visa you would change to would be an "O", not "B". As long as you enjoy the trip down to Penang, it'll be easier to get another TV.

You don't need to go to Penang and get a visa.

Extending by one month will put you at Nov 9. That means you only need ~50 more days to Xmas.

You have two options, both much easier than getting a new tourist visa in Penang:

1. Go out of Thailand (bus/flight/walk/whatever) and immediately *fly* back in without a visa. You will get 30 days on arrival, and will be able to extend by another 30 days. Cost: ~2500-3500 baht of travel + 1900 for extension.

2. After extending by one month until Nov 9, you will be able to extend by another week (just go back to immigration and ask). This puts you at Nov 16 and means you only need ~43 more days. You can do a land-border run and net 45/60 days. Get yourself to Ranong, take a longtail boat to Myanmar and get 15 (or 30, see note) days on your return. Extend by another 30 days at immigration. Cost: ~1500 baht of travel + 1900 for the additional week + US$10 at Myanmar immigration + 1900 for additional 30 days.

Note: if you are from a G7 country, you don't need the one week extension, since you will receive 30 days for the land-border run, extendable by another 30. Cost will reduce by 1900, of course.

Note that both of these options are same-day solutions. You don't need to be out of Thailand for more than a few hours at worst.
