Dual citizenship with dual passports

Post by rochana1 »

My Thai wife (who has dual citizenship and passports for Thailand and U.S.) and I (on a retirement visa) will be moving permanently to Hua Hin soon. My question regards the showing of passports at the airports by my wife who is a Thai national possessing both a Thai and a U.S. passport when she travels to/from Thailand and the United States. I was told by someone that there is no problem as dual citizenship is accepted in Thailand and the U.S. and that all she needs to do when traveling to/from Thailand and U.S. is to leave and enter both countries using the passport for that country and show the airline check-in in both countries both passports to show that she has the legal right to enter the destination country without a visa. I was told that immigration these days doesn't care is there isn't a "stamp trail" in passports.

I would greatly appreciate knowing the traveling experience of expats who have a similar situation.

My wife is a dual US/Thai citizen and she always did exactly as you described above. Never had any problems.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

You have it made at Immigration at the airport. Wife can take you through Thai side of immigration with herself and you won't get stuck in any of those long ques on the other side.

I am not sure what you are saying. I will be entering Thailand with a retirement O-A visa. Are you saying that I can by checked by the Thai immigration officer in the same line with my wife who will be entering as a Thai national with her Thai passport and that that line will be a shorter line? Thanks. Sid L.

Yes if you are traveling with your Thai spouse you can both go through immigration using the Thai passport side. This is usually much quicker

I think you will find that Thailand forbids dual citizenship for persons beyond 18 years of age . See the Nationality Act of 1965 with amendments #2 1992 and #3 1994. Currently officialdom tends to ignore this with so many many Thais including some of the very highest ranking in Thai society holding multiple citizenships what with having been born outside of the country.
Now the threat of terrorism and international crime are causing many countries to review multiple passport carriers.
A Thai mate, born overseas but holding a Thai ID card, has recently had to jump thru so many hoops including DNA testing to finally get Thai citizenship.
Now an interesting twist has shown up in this procedure as to the validity of any business dealings he has done in Thailand prior to gaining this citizenship.
Complexity is so simply overrated

I think the practice is reciprocal in most countries. In the US they don't break up families and all in the party can go through the US citizen line. Pete

About 4 years ago Mrs m took me to the Thai line. I like to follow the rules (usually) and asked the imm officer there. She asked "married?" I said yes, and she said "OK". Been doing it since with no problems (except for dirty looks from farangs in big lines!!)

I have done the same with traveling with my son but without my wife. He holds both Thai and British passports but of course enters on his Thai passport. Never had an issue.

At U.K. Immigration I queued with my wife for an eternity in the Non EU immigration line and was told that next time I should use the EU queue with my family as it is permitted and much quicker.
