OK, from a female perspective:
Mr. VS is eight years older than I am, and the older we get, the lesser the gap is. We like the same kind of music (apart from some of his hippy stuff), and our discussions about politics tend to come from a different viewpoint. Generally we are on the same wavelength.
I know this discussion is about Farang/Thai relationships, but I really don't think that the age difference has a great effect - it's more about the mindset. My twin sister is married to a man 25 years older than her - and they have a 10 year-old son. They have a great relationship, apart from her having more energy. The upside is that he's a very 'young' 72 year-old, the downside is that he'll probably not have the pleasure of seeing his son get married (and she'll be a relatively young widow).
Any kind of relationship is based on something - it may be financial security, sex, or a bonding of minds. As we all know, some things can change, or become difficult, other qualities of a relationship will last forever.

Good to be in the minority with ya, some of those other categories would put me with high school girls.Sabai Jai wrote:The Missus is 4 months younger than me.
That puts us in a minority judging by the current poll

Happily married for 14 years with a 13 year age gap. But the perception of the age gap seems less now than it did 14 years ago. I worry however that the perception will widen in about 10 years when I start to get to the past it age, and will accelerate rapidly thereafter so that the perception will be more than the 13 year actual gap. I will be old old when she will still be a comfortable middle age. I know she will still be there, but I have a frustration that I knowthat the the point will be reached where I will be placing unfair burdens on her.
All of this depends upon if we are talking about our mia leung or mia noi(s)? An ancient custom practiced today by many, if not most Thai Men.
Or, is this another example of discrimination against farangs?
A Thai mia leung is close to the same age as her husband. The mia noi(s) never are, 10-20-30 years difference.
Are these Thai men looked down upon? Never, they're applauded by their peers for their stamina, money and guts to parade around with the mia noi(s), while mia leung usually sits home with the kids and accepts life as it is here...ho hum...just give me shopping money dear before you leave.
Now, let one of us try telling our mia leung we have a mia noi...LMAO. Out come the words, blades and other assorted weapons...something they wouldn't dare do if married to a Thai. We are being had.

There was a woman who used to write etiquette books back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's...can't remember her name at the moment but she, and her opinion, were well respected for some reason.
She wrote about all facets of proper life from how to set a dinner table to the proper age difference of a marriage in a civilized society.
For some reason, I always remembered the marriage rule. It was that a man shouldn't marry a woman younger than half his age plus seven years. Of course I've broken that rule as have many here.

Anyone who criticises or judges people based on age difference (unless out of genuine concern for friends/family) has the problem IMO, they don't know the situation.
It may be a 68 year old with a young Thai wife, he may have no-one in the world to care for him, comes here has a partner who makes his remaining years happy and comfortable, when he goes he leaves her his dosh instead of the cat eating it, then her and her family have a comfortable life.
Might have been more of an arrangement than a relationship, no-ones been hurt, everyones happy.

Each to their own but an 'arrangement' to me is more of a business transaction than a relationship. I know I'll change my ways when I'm older and 'relationships' have lost their appeal ... bring on the dancing girls!
