auto insurance
Can someone please give me a LOS auto insurance lesson? If I'm not concerned with coverage for my own vehicle, what insurance class do you suggest for 3rd party liability claims, for both property damage and injury?I have the basic govt. insurance for both an old car and a new motorbike. For the govt. insurance, is it possible to get a hard copy of the policy? In the event there is an accident that caused severe injuries to both myself and the other person, what does the govt. insurance cover? Your help is appreciated.

As you probably are aware there are 3 classes of Insurance available, not including the compulsory government. Have not seen a hard copy of this, although I may have one written in Thai and do not know what it is!Cowtown Comedy wrote:Can someone please give me a LOS auto insurance lesson? It covers you for injury to other people, and has a low limit, I think around 100K Baht. There is a couple of other points covered with it, but it is very basic.
First class car insurance is fully comprehensive for your own car and liability. It includes bail cover, usually around 200K, and cover to other property.
Second class insurance gives you cover against damage to other parties, both people and property. It should include fire and theft to your own car.
This is the one that you want if you are prepared to carry your own risk on your own car. It includes bail cover and a couple of other small points. One thing to watch with this is the limit on cover to the other car. It is relatively low, (maybe 2Mil), but can be increased for a small amount, I think it is 200 Bht per Million. They will not tell you this and some insurance co will not do it, but if you hit and write off a 5 Million Baht Benz, or similar, you should have it.
Third class insurance is fairly cheap, but it only increases the cover that is provided by the compulsory government one, and is not really of much use to us.
I have second class on my 10 year old SUV, with additional 5 Million cover to other property, 200K bail, 10 Million personal liability, and around 500K fire and theft cover, but this will depend on the vehicle and will reduce every year. It cost about 6K Baht a year.
Viriyah have an office on the Klong road, but they would not increase the limit as I wanted. It took a phone call to Bangkok to sort that out, as Bangkok have no problem doing it. There are several others but I am happy with Viriyah.

Not really sure, but around 20k. You can twist their arm for no claim bonus, if you have had previous accident free cover. Also be aware that it costs more if the car is registered to a company. There is also a deductable, but should not be more than 2K Baht.crazy88 wrote:How much should i be paying for 1st class insurance on a 1 year old 3.0 2wd vigo ? Also my girlfriend keps rabbiting on about some other fees that have to be paid every year![]()

Your girlfriend may be referring to the compulsory government third party insurance, which seems to have increased a bit this year, but around 1K as bozzman stated. You have to have this before you can register / renew the licence, and they no longer issue a separate "sticker" for it, but it is done at the same Land Transport office.

Nereus, so if i have an older vehicle that I'm not concerned about accident coverage, I should get 2nd class with an additional 5 mil 3rd party coverage? My biggest fear is personal injury....is 10 million enough? Will I be facing a law suit regardless? The word on the street is if you injur someone (a Thai) your in trouble anyway! Thanks for recommending Viriyah. Are they near the Biker Bar...same side?
Well,I do not think that you will get any more than 10 Mil cover, but you may if you shop around. I feel that what I have is the best compromise for a strong old car, and a driver that does not drink! They include legal cover in the policy, so I doubt that you would have a problem with a law suit.Cowtown Comedy wrote:Nereus, so if i have an older vehicle that I'm not concerned about accident coverage, I should get 2nd class with an additional 5 mil 3rd party coverage? Yes, Viriyah office is on the same side of the Klong road, a bit closer to town I think. They have a sign up with their logo on it. Just be aware that the last time that I went to get cover there for a vehicle that I bought in Pranburi, they did not know about extending the liability cover, or so they claimed! They do have a call center number: 1557,
or head office in Bangkok: 02 641 3500-79
They have an English brochure available, but would not guarantee that Hua Hin have a copy!
