Wall mounted water heaters

Post by richard »

Wasn't sure where to post this

Mods, please move if appropriate. Ta

How much and where for a simple water heater. Wall mounted and to feed only a shower?

I'm no DIY man any more so have lost touch.

Cheers

We got two in Pure last year where they were on special offer, I also noticed the other day they have some electric showers on offer in Home Pro which might be of use too

Richard, the last time I bought one was to put into a rental a few years ago but I think they run from a few hundred for a simple one with a round dial to adjust the temp (a brand like Sharp) to a few thousand for a digital one from a company like Siemens. I bought the cheap Sharp one and it worked fine for the year and a half we used it. Got it at Big Kiang, by the way and I think he may still have better prices than Pure or Homepro.

I would be a bit wary about standing under an electric shower that only cost a few hundred Baht. There are many different types, although they may appear to look the same on the outside. The main thing to try and ensure is that it has some form of earth leakage safety cut out device. It should be earthed as well, but that may not be an option if you have a typical Thai wired house. The type with just a selector switch is usually enough control, and a bit cheaper than the electronic types.
You also ned to decide the wattage rating--the higher it is the more it costs to run.

Most definately look in Big Kiang, the other two places are a rip off.

Richard, I'd recommend minimum 3.5kw one going upto 6kw if you like a bit of a power shower. Our builder buys them but think they're 4-7k Baht depending on kw rating and manufacturer.

Big Kiang is the cheapest, HomePro has a massive range.

On Phetchkasem road headed south just past Market Village but on the opposite side... big sign, you can't miss it.

If you walk out of Market Village, crossed the road and turned right towards Khao Takiab, about a couple of hundred yards down at most.
Massive sign outside, big open fronted shop/warehouse.

Besides the units that just run the water through a hot coil, there is the Ariston brand out of Italy and sold widely here. It's actually a water tank (15 liters for overhead shower) that holds the water and keeps it heated. I've found with these you can get a long, hot shower. Seem reliable also as used one for years in another house and it was already 6 years old when I started, so 9 years with no breakdown. The 15 liter is about 7,000 and the 30 liter for under the sink, for bath etc is about 12,500. Pete

Oh, and since you've never shopped at Big Kiang before, you should know, his prices are somewhat negotiable. I've never paid the first price for anything in there and I have bought lots of small and large appliances from him.

I like them too Pete have one at home, you do not see a plastic box then just a chrome mixer tap, and they can serve every outlet in the house.
Only thing is you would need to run an additional copper pipe inside the wall and fix a mixer tap, ie: two pipes H&C.

I have them in my new house also. The upstairs bathrooms were already piped and fixtured with both hot and cold. Two baths the unit is directly above the shower as only piped for the shower. The MB I've got a 30 liter under the sinks which feeds the sinks, bath and shower. The kitchen is only piped for cold but you can get around that by installing a T off your cold with one hose to the cold side of the mixer tap, one hose to the cold inlet on the Ariston, and then the hot out to the hot side of the mixer tap. Have to confess I agree - the times I use the heater on the shower are few and far between. It's hot enough already. I need it cold to wake me up in the morning and cool me off in the afternoon and evening.
This is the way
