That's the mistake many people make especially in Thailand. The bacteria can exist in sufficient quantities to kill on a pin head.
My understanding of long term effects is only applicable to water with additives as used in the western tap waters.
Thailand has the perfect climate for breeding bacteria and farangs will have less immunity.
I have been seriously ill 3 times by accidentally getting infected from tap water. The second time I was infected by the hepatitis C virus which very luckily I got rid of.
I was not aware of dangers with the 50 litre casks but best buy from a dealer that has a large turnover I would think. I used the company in Chom Sin on the Sra Song junction.
