Nevets, I'm pretty sure you couldn't revert to 400,000. I think you would have to go for the 40,000 baht proven income.

This may be a silly question, but why? You need 800k in the bank as a retiree and 400k as a 'family supporter'- I think. Assuming that's correct, why should there be a problem if your status changes?

The 400,000 baht was "grandfathered." If you changed or never had it in the first place, you can't have/get it back.
That's only the way I see it.

Lomu, where are you, time to get up again. Just because you now have a "retirement" visa does not excuse you!

nevets, try this:

The regulations changed on the !st October, 2006. The section you need is: 7.17

I can confirm what has been said above; the only option for those married to a Thai is to show at least 40k baht per month income (as well as a host of other non-financial things), However it does not need to be shown as coming into Thailand - I got my extension with income coming from interest on an offshore investment account that is transferred into a UK bank.
The 400k in a Thai bank is only available to those who were approved under this rule when it was in force, and only if they have continued to do so unbroken (although if someone was on good terms with immigration who had let their extension lapse I'm sure some rule bending could be done in some cases).

I've been away for a few days, but sound advice above, nevets.
There are always exceptions to every rule, but basically you won't be able to revert to a marriage/family income extension based on 400k in a Thai bank account. Only 40k per month income - can be from you or your Thai wife or a combination of the two of you.
