Loy Kratong festival

Post by squire »

Loy Kratong festival is scheduled for later next week in Thailand.

Does anyone know where Loy Kratong events are likely to take place in Hua Hin or Cha'am, thanks.

All the big hotels usually schedule a Loy Kratong event. We went to the Sofitel one a couple of years ago. They had a beautiful garden setting with an amazing food buffet and a Kratong contest (judging the best by the spectators) in the pool (giant Kratongs that were amazingly intricate). Everyone then floated their own Kratongs in the pool.

It was a nice evening out, with great food, but expensive.

Most people just go down to the beaches and try to light (wind usually makes it difficult) and launch their Kratongs in the ocean (waves usually bring them back to shore or keep them there).

My wife says it's better in villages that have a river nearby. We are going up to hers in Issan this year to celebrate on the Menam Khong (Mekong) river.

HHFarang, I envy you. .the best Loy kratong we ever had was back in the Issan village with the family. We joined the rest of the village residents floating our kratongs ( which we had made ourselves from scratch) in the large pond near the village. Very Thai, very traditional . .very beautiful.

We cant go this year. .our 8th Loy Kratong, and we will first go to the hotel. .and later on probably float our kratongs in a pond nearby or in the canal.

Trying to do this in the ocean is, as you describe. . very difficult even if you are prepared to wade out quite far. One year in Cha Am we tried this. . .and watched as some kid quite a way out walked over and searched them for satangs. . .( usually included for good luck)

This is a really beautiful Thai holiday and my favorite by far.

Good chance once again to experience the village life, HH. A friend just back from Ubon says it's starting to get cool up there. Should be a nice trip for you, and ground still soft enough from the rains to put stakes in for the new house. :D Pete

Wat Huay Mongkhon is a nice setting for Loy Krathong. There’s a river so it’s easy to launch your Krathong.

Last year there was a great crowd and celebrations as of late afternoon on Takiab beach. There was live music, dancing and ('beauty-contest'?), fires on teh beach and kratongs being put in the sea as of 8pm-ish

I like the beach also on Loy Kratong. It's very low tide over this side each year and assume same in HH. You have to walk out at least 50 meters before you even get to the water. Usually very calm as well. However, it's been raining over here daily for a month so I hope it all finishes by next Wednesday. Pete

In SW London, we're heading here:

http://www.buddhapadipa.org/pages/temple.html

Specifically for:

http://www.buddhapadipa.org/plinks/mhar-6qdqft

All of 2 miles from where we live. Went there the other year, it gets very, very busy! But great food, entertainment, a lake for the floats and so on. All in a few prime acres of Wimbledon real estate!

Any HHAD members in the locale wanting to meet up, please send a pm!

That's actually the other reason we're going. I'm going to take a closer look at the area as in what's available in the way of entertainment and shopping and we're going to see what land along the river is going for. :D
