Big Boy is correct - West Ham were the last team outside of the top division to win the FA Cup in 1980, beating Arsenal 1 - 0 with the goal coming from Sir Trevor Brooking. The closest since were Millwall who reached the Final a few seasons ago, losing 3-0 to Manchester United, and last season when Cardiff lost 1-0 to Portsmouth.

Wanderlust wrote:... but here is an interesting bit of personal connected trivia - my sister moved to Suffolk about 8 years back, to a little place called Leiston. Their team has just reached the 1st round of the FA Cup for the first time ever (drew 0 - 0 yesterday) and are the lowest ranked team currently in the competition.
Another little bit of trivia: I used to live in Framlingham (which isn't far from Leiston). All my family still live in Fram. I used to work with Andy Crisp - the Chairman of Leiston FC. They're playing Fleetwood today at 3pm so they kicked off about 20 mins ago. I'm not a great football fan, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the boys. :)

VS,
Are you sure about the match being played today? According to the BBC it is next Tuesday at 7.45pm UK time. It would be very unusual to play a match in the week at 3pm, mainly because any fans would have to take time off work to watch it.
Anyway, I have been through Framlingham a couple of times when visiting my sister, so lets cheer Leiston on together shall we?

You're absolutely right W, got my Tuesdays and Thursdays muddled up - I must be turning into a Thai!

I'll uncross my fingers until next week. Let's hope all the plumbers and plasterers get a day off on Monday to prepare themselves for the big one.

Go Leiston Go...

SJ: It could've been worse - I was expecting a far bigger thrashing.

I was reading the local rag and 120 fans went up to support them. You've got to bear in mind here that most of them had probably never been out of East Anglia before. :|

They've got a bit of dosh for the club for getting so far, and I really don't think that they expected to win. It was nice while it lasted...

How the mighty have fallen :lach: Still, they were always prone to giving us a good laugh in the FA Cup :D Never mind Richard, you must still be able to remember the good times

.............. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Arsenal Reserves at the Emirates - shouldn't be too much of a problem. If it were at Home Park, it could have been a different story.

The only shock about losing at the Emirates was that it was only by 2 goals, and even then we had to help Arsenal out by scoring 1 for them.

On the bright side this season, the Premiership teams seem to be taking the competition a lot more seriously. The reserve players who are getting a game are established first team fringe players as opposed to the recent trend of playing their youth team.

It should make for a much better competition :D
