Less tourists than usual in HH?
Leaving soon for the annual low budget escape from the swedish winter. YESS!
Slightly less budget this time, the baht is expensive!
Travelling around for 10 weeks, I will end up in HH once or twice.
Are there notacible fewer tourists this year, or is it more or less the same?
If you have any info about other parts of Thailand when it comes to this matter, dont hesitate to share!

Hua Hin has just been twinned with the city of Deadsville, Arizona!
This actually makes it better for anyone visiting.

Yes, ditto for the Rayong area and Pattaya. Two trips into Pattaya over the past week at different times of the day and was wizzing around in the car on roads that are usually bumper to bumper. Beach Road looked like a road and not a parking lot, and all the popular shopping areas are essentially empty of farangs except a local resident spotted here and there. There was not one bus of Korean or Chinese tour groups when you usually spot a dozen or more at any given day of the week. Food shopping at Villa and Friendship stores indicated that their normal stocks of farang imported items is way down, so appears they are cutting back also. Many top hotels have cancelled their Christmas/New Year gala dinners.
Moving on to Rayong.....it's always a sleepy place but a good indicator is Koh Samet and a friend told me that the ferry boats going back and forth only have a handfull of people on them. If true, that's a good opportunity for a quiet Christmas getaway as it's a beautiful place and even better when you can walk the beaches alone. Pete

Glad to know there's at least somebody being blown on Bint&Baht.

Agree with Pete about it being a great time for anyone who wants a quiet getaway/holiday, now is the time, doesn't matter whether you live here or are just visiting.
Even if you're a young single guy 'on the piss' in Pattaya, you'll feel like a pornstar at the moment, best time to go is when it's like this.

Pete - good to hear that Kho Samet is still a peaceful place and yes, it's beautiful. I remember a certain Pattaya resident having an argument with a canoe paddle there years ago. Needed stitches. The lady doctor also prescribed a tetanus shot and said she needed to go to the 'lestaulant' for it.

the world recession is just one factor. Combine that with
rising ticket costs due to oil price rises early in the year - the airlines still seem to be charging for that even tho the oil prices have dropped;
uncompetitive baht exchange value - for Europeans this is particularly relevant as, for example, the pound has lost about 20% of its value against the baht in 12 months;
political chaos in Bangkok plastered all over and sensationalised by western media...and the continuing political uncertainty in regards to the UDD/DAAD;
airport closures and travel disruptions recently...does tend to put people off;
and add into that heady mix:
closing all tourist facing bars for two 5 day periods during the peak of last high season...that sent home a hell of a lot of pissed off tourists who no doubt told all their friends.....
for spice add;
recent visa law changes
and
recent significant regional outbreaks of Avian Flu (China, Laos and Cambodia)
stir carefully over a low heat (as its cold here) until simmering and
hey presto
NO TOURISTS!

Was in Bintabaht last night - Saturday, and almost Christmas after all.
Along the top road, it looked really quite busy - restaurants doing OK, people strolling along the road in reasonable numbers. But turning into Bintabaht was a bit of a shock - practically nobody. Don't think I've ever seen it so quiet as it was around 8pm last night, except when there's been a shutdown.
Also, went for a massage at You&Me 2. Had the massage (about 2pm), then sat talking to the girls for about another hour, maybe more, and never saw another customer.

Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....
