the first thing that i think is relevant ,is that such a small community [lonely planet 48,5000] ,has such a big following aka hadd .
i also think , after contributing slightly ,that hhad can change events and occurences from occurring [hee hee] .

2/
at the end of the day , no matter what business you are in , you have to speculate 2 accumulate Not now , now its dog eat dog . family against family ,friend against friend.....thai versus farang . If we can all consolidate what weve got and chill , not panic , either side of the waters ,then , i think weve got a better chance .

3/
ive just looked at the latest rates,,,,,,,,,it's not good reading . 48b to the quid and it seems 2 be dropping , At the end of the day .even if it drops below 40 would it stop people cumming ?.........no . Would it stop people ' s frivolous spending ......yes

4
the reason im going on about it is that ill be there in around 2 and a half weeks and im getting a bit scared .will there be anyone there ? what if the pond drops to 14 [hee hee] i may not have enough dosh to get back 2 dundee

I've known the exchange rate at 32 to the Pound. It didn't stop me coming, and it certainly didn't stop me spending.

If you're saving all year around for a holiday to visit somewhere half way around the world, what is your priority?

- Existing whilst in LOS, and being 100% solvent when you go home?

- Still having a no holds barred holiday, and incurring a little debt that you can clear up within a couple of months on your return?

If you are asking the questions, I have to assume that you have had to save for and are looking forward to this holiday. If you've already booked, you don't have any more time to save before the holiday, so you simply continue putting a litte aside when you return until you've cleared the debt.

You're coming a long way - make sure you enjoy it :D

Bless you Tartan you're just getting colly wobbles is all! I'll tell you a secret - I was the same before going back to HH last October, despite having previously lived there for over 5 years. Couldn't sleep, rumbly in the tumbly, sound familiar?
You will be fine duck. Exchange rate none of us can do anything about. Yes, listen to Big Boy, its been down in the 30's before. All you can do is put aside your taxi money for getting back to the airport. There's no airport tax anymore.
Divide what you have left by the 22 days is it? And allow for the inevitable extra spending. Plus a few 'frivols'
Its really quite a friendly little place, and not much sign of Thai/Farang battles in the sois! Try wandering a little way out of town. Pick up a free map and maybe start with the Night Market - right down to the railway line end, Railway Restaurant is opposite you. Meals from about 80 baht. Find your way to Satukarn Square as well for some good eateries. Go South a little way on Naebkerhardt Road to its junction with Chomsin Road for stall food at 30 or 40 baht.
Personally some of my fave eating places are the open restaurants at the Grand Night Market. 60 to 80 baht, and the beer is cheaper at places like that too. Nip into the Shopping Mall to stock up on biscuits and snacks for your room, or the 7-Elevens for sarneys and hotdogs.
Whatever else you spend is of course up to you and the ladies concerned. Just be careful and don't carry too much cash. A debit or credit bank card can be used at all the ATMs and can be a godsend if you end up over budget.
You've been very complimentary about HHAD - thankyou - but remember there are loads of expats who DON'T use it. I heard an estimate of 3000 now living in the HuaHin area. Also many users, like myself, don't actually live there, or some live there part time. So theres more expats there than you think!

you are using the lonely planet for what? A travel guide? Id recommend recycling it via the toilet.....The Daily Sport is about as reliable a source of information.

quick answers:

a meal.... bowl of noodles 25bht, steak dinner at El Murphys with 2 beers just under 500 but worth every satang, lots of choice in between those two budgets.

beer?....in a bottle shop a bottle of Leo is about 30bht, in a bar 60bht, and a Heineken comes in at about 80bht in most bars.

lass..... well the going rate seems stuck at 1000 bht a night and has been for a good few years. Dont be a cheap charlie....

after hour bars..... lots. usually in the karaoke bars you drink till dawn and later. Mainstream bars close at 2.

have a good one mate

as ive said , if theres a choice between cold dark dundee and skint or hot bright hua hin and skint then its a no brainer .
looking forward to soaking up the lifestyle you guys are having although 1000b seems a wee bit steep £20.
i would have thought thier prices would have tumbled the same as our pound has

I hope Sandman will correct me if I'm wrong Tartan, but 1000 baht will probably be for the whole night. Bar fines are mainly set by the bar owners, not the girls, and part of the price compensates the bar for the girl not being there.
Anything you decide to pay her on top of her share of the bar fine is of course up to you, but a meal is always appreciated by Thai ladies, as is the use of a comfortable room and hot shower of course!

However when the baht was at 30 to the pound things were alot cheaper here. It's feels more expensive now than when you got 30 to the baht.

True enough JG, but you're going back more than 10 years and inflation has hit everyone since then. Theres still a noticeable difference between the cost of living in HH and the North of England at least - with the exception of some drinks!
House prices and rents were, to me, the most noticeable increases in HH, and those things fortunately don't affect tourists.

mags is right.....1000bht is "long time" rate ie all night......and mate....20 quid is cheap by any mark. Back home escorts run at £200 per hour. The lasses send most of this money back home to keep the kids and family....like I said, dont be a cheap charlie.

Bar fines run at about 300 bht or so.....that gets added to your drink tab.

long term discounts/waiving bar fines are negotiated with the bar owner/mama san.

When it was 30 baht to the pound the girls were free, a nice breakfast and being your escort was all that was wanted anything extra was a bonus to the ladies!

btw it's a pound a pint at witherspoons now. Alot of things are cheaper in the UK than here at the moment.

Hi JG - yes I just saw news of the Wetherspoons 'pound a pint' thing. On SOME beers they say. Wonder which ones? Looks like they may get too much Government stick over it though.
I know there are some decent Wetherspoons around but unfortunately my local one has to lock the doors to the (admittedly well heated) smoking area at 10.30 so I tend to avoid the place!
Sandman speaks wise words to our new friend Tartan though - don't be 'cheap charlie' and I would add especially at the moment. The girls will be really needing some extra cash, and £20 isn't a lot.
I'm beginning to sound like I'm promoting their extra curricular activities, but its just a way of life, and a lot of visitors to LOS don't realise that many girls are freelance, and just dream of finding the right farang, or 2.
BTW I heard that in HH the bar girls were buying up copies of a 100 baht book which gives advice on how to find your ideal farang?

Be careful though...not to fall for the poor bar girl story, falling head over heels, sending money from o/s.

Not all of these girls are from poor backgrounds and some do it for the "lifestyle".

The Question you should ask yourself is this.
Would you do it for £20??

Be lucky and enjoy Hua Hin.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
