HuaHin Bars of Old
Guess - as I understand it the word 'farang' is of French origin. So 'appen the plural would correctly be 'farang' also? Or les Farang?

Family Bar next door still has Elna in residence. I saw her there earlier this week and she made out that the place was still hers, and that SHE changed it. I know - TIT!
Watch this space!
I remember that what is now the Family Bar was originally a hairdresser, then a bar ( With the pool table upstairs, then a hairdresser and now a bar again!
Two other bars that I don't think have been mentioned yet are Billy's and Bernies bars down the arcade between the Hilton and the beach road.
I didn't realise that there were any bars down there for a long time but they certainly go back at least six years.

Aye News - Bernie and Billy have been there on the Bazaar for at least 9 years. There has been some mention as they were both originally on Bintabahn but made wise moves IMO.
Also next to Bernies was Little Big Horn, with Doug and Jeouw. Now sucked into the Mai Thai restaurant. Jeouw opened a small place inbetween Bernie and Billy, as did Bernies ex Noi a bit later.
Also in that strip at one time was a Sushi restaurant which was very good, but didn't last long.
Red Indian Bar is still there I think, and Guess already has it noted.
BTW Guess I've had no response to my query about Suzie Wongs

Yes that is what I believe. I have heard though that the word Farang was written in Thai records long the French arrived on the scene. The Portugese were here well before in the late 16th century.
There is a story that after Magellan was killed in the Philippines the mutineer Sebastian del Cano stopped of in Southern Thailand before rounding the Malay Peninsular and into the Indian Ocean. Some of his mutinous crew were so taken by the friendliness of the Thai women that they refused to return to Portugal. This would make the first ('modern day') European setllers in Thailand arriving in about 1522.
Of course it is unbelievable that any man would give up his European homeland for the sake of a few Thai ladies.

Just a reminder. I do have Billy's and Bernies in two locations.\
The map will show all venues that were open between 1/1/97 and 31/12/2000 which in come cases may be many but mostly just one or two. The map will have numbered sites and a keyed legend.
So its still dates that are important to me.
In the case of a business that moved and kept the same name then they will be E.g. U-Turn 1 and U-Turn 2.
My next step is to complete the "What they are today" list which will act as the site reference. Even if somewhere has been completely rebuilt the site remains the same. E.g. U-Turn 1 / Blue Angel. This way people can tell exactly where somewhere was.

Hi, when I used to live there around 2003ish I played pool for Craig at the U Turn bar near the temple.I Used to drink in what is now the Red bar, Been racking my brain trying to remember its old name, and in Roys bar Fairways. Guess it was never a French restaurant as I helped Roy finish it off t get it open in time. He had the place built. Also Johnnie Walkers bar and the bar next door which was then Up to U bar I think. The English guy was always getting battered or stabbed by his missus. Oh happy days

I never forget a face but in your case I'll make an exception!

I seem to remember Toby telling me in 2003 that he "owned the Rainbow and the bar next door" or was it the next but one to the rainbow, going down the soi. Can't remember now.
He said "he rented that one out".
Damn, I miss that little soi.

Edited to highlite my lousy memory.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
