Get real.....I've been here two years and four months and I miss it every friggin day. So does the boss who was 31 when I took her there and is now 51.......she wasn't exactly thrilled about moving back here.

That is not to say we don't love and enjoy many of the things that brought us here. The fact of the matter for us, however, is we couldn't afford to live where we wanted to live when I retired and it was move to Thailand or keep working and die a hell of a lot sooner than I will now.

Maybe when our house in California sells and we don't have three grand a month leaking out of our bank account we'll feel differently. We can't afford to even go back for a visit until it sells which may be a large reason we do miss it so much, but none-the-less, we didn't really move voluntarily per se.

If I had the simple choice right now without regard to economics, the only two things that might keep me here would be the weather and my sweet little caddy, nu Da. The boss and I were discussing this earlier today and we are in complete agreement........Cha Am/Hua Hin/Thailand is a wonderful place, but for us California is the place we still call home.

Well I must admit that I don't remember "home" all that well anymore, it has been 26 years since I left the states aqnd have only been back once in the last 10years. My wife goes back every year or so and we plan a trip in 2010.

The life style and things I liked 26 years ago no longer exist and the place has changed way to much for me. When I did go back two years ago there were an amazing number of really heavy people crowding into very busy malls. It was easy to see why they were so heavy, when you go into a restaurant and order a meal it is typically enough for three people.

People aren't very friendly and everyone is in a rush to do something.

At times I get pissed at things in Thailand like the traffic and the uncertainty of the gov't regarding farangs. But comparing that with the good things, which there are many more of, I can't come up with a place that I would rather be.

My wife said she misses the ease of communicating in a english speaking country (she is from the US also). Communicating for me is a major problem in English and impossible it Thai. I have impaired hearing. Or you could say I can't hear worth sh-it. So my wife does 99% of our communicating.

Well I do miss the ease in which you can get things done and buy most anything that you could possible want in the US and Australia (where we spent a good part of 20 years) there isn't a lot we want anymore.

But unless they ask us to leave this is where I immagine we will spend the rest of our very enjoyable life. Having been retired now for 25 years and 10 days I think I have the hang of it, and it is great. I must say that part of a happy retirement is having enough $$ to live comfortable and not worry about $ when the exchange rate takes a bad swing.

get real?

TIGR not sure who you aimed the "get real" at. . but the reality for me ( and for a couple of other posters here) is EXACTLY as described.

Your reality is obviously different and you seem to be in an unfortunate situation. . .but please dont disparage the posts of those of us for whom this is home or imply that we are somehow living in a dream world or just pretending to be happy here.

That's well put Norm! I have only been away from the UK continually for about 8-9 years and the above is applicable for me also. The UK is barely recognisable now compared to merely 10 years ago, not a place I know anymore when I recently, briefly, last visited.
