Re: New business !
That's almost a rhetorical question and one that has probably given many people 'sleepless nights'.lazerlab wrote:If you where going to start a new business in Thailand. What would you suggest, and why ?
A small business to 'keep the wife busy', OK

It is all set up to be as obstructive as possible and many 'fall foul of' trying to do things "legally" here only to find out that that is not possible. You will need a "slush fund".

Forgive me gentlemen if you think I'm being too cynicle here.
Good luck, you'll need it.

Resolve dissolves in alcohol
If one has credentials in psychology you could get a stool and a sign and make a fortune reading palms. I actually think you could get a work permit for that also.
Next time out on the town take a girls hand, look at her palm intensely, mutter a few Hmmmm's, look into her eyes (by that time she'll be shaking with anticipation), then say anything you want about her future depending upon your mood and what you want to accomplish.
For some reason these girls think farangs have physic power
It's all great fun and I have indeed seen a group of them buy drinks endlessly for the farang doing it. They believe it. All you have to do is change the drinks to cash. Pete

its not cheap either and you are required to pay tax even if you aint made a penny! - coz you are a farang

I was thinking of a business to keep me busy.
BIG BUSINESS. (I am looking for investors). Anyone ?
Building a speed train between BKK and Pattaya.
Fiber-optic broadband. Minimum 100 mbps.
Start sample drilling for oil in the South Chinese Sea.
Building a gaspipe from Norway to SE. Asia.
THINK BIG.

You know the old saying - the only way to become a millionaire in Thailand is to arrive a billionaire!
Seriously though very few farangs make a successful business out of nothing here, it can be done but it is quite rare - most go back to their countries with their tails between their legs! The norm in Hua Hin seems to be to go into property development, half build a bunch of shoddy houses, and rip off a load of unsuspecting foreigners before doing a runner!
If you have that much money build a golf course with naked caddies that HHAD members can play for free on.

Network Marketing???
A dirty phrase I know, but I've been considering this. Not as I expect to make pots of money out of it, but I was more interested in making my trips to LOS partly tax deductible.
Teerak currently belongs to a MLM company that unfortunately does not operate in NZ where I am living. I have found one though, that operates both in LOS & NZ. Now if she sponsored me into one of these businesses & I found some similar thinking people in NZ, or signed up people in LOS (could be Expats or Thai's) then I have a network & could easily (in my opinion) convince Inland Revenue in NZ that when I went to LOS I spent 50% of my time on business appointments. That makes 50% of my travel & accomodation costs tax deductible. Entertainment of prospects would be deductible too but would be pushing things a bit far I think.
To make it sustainable some people do need to join from time to time & use the product(s) that the company trades in, otherwise I don't think you could convince a tax department that you were "attempting" to make a profit from it.
What do people think?
Sorry to the OP, this isn't really thinking big but it's been at the back of my mind & your thread has prompted me to raise the question
