Chong-Chom border crossing..

Post by usual suspect »

After posting a coupla letters on here about the possibility of doing a visa-run coupled with a visit to the Mrs's family home Nr Nang-Rong and getting some handy tips I thought we'd give it a go....

* If you need just a stamp at an immigration office then Kap Choeng is fine, has a nice Thai lady that speaks good English and willing to help.

* At Chong-Chom border (big set of gates between you and Cambodia)
it was a case of park-up on the road side and walk to the left side of the large-gates to the out-bound Thai office/hut and get stamped out.

* walk thru pedestrian gate at side of where you are and across a big open area to the building directly in front of you..(Cambodian in-bound office)

* Give 'em your pazzy,20 US dollars + a pazzy-size photo, then fill in the basic form they give to you.

* You get your pazy from the man and walk across the open-area again to the office directly behind you and hand over your pazzy for stamping out. (the official really scrutenised my pazzy b4 stamping).

* That done walk back to the big-gates and thru a barriered walkway up to the Thai inbound hut. Fill-in usual entry form/card, check your stamp-date when official hands you your pazzy back and walk out.

* All done in 10/15 mins.
Pros & cons...
... get there before 10.30am cos after that a constant stream of mini-buses arrive taking Thais to the Casino there...queues imminent.
* I took on board one of the freindly touts there on the Thai side to show me what to do...(for 50b it was worth it,now I know the format for next time)
* Some Farang are asked for 2-300b when getting 'stamped-out' of Cambodia...this is tea-money,you do NOT have to pay, but on refusal I've heard the official will put his stamp in the middle of the page or 2 pages-on.
* Remember that in your pazzy you will get a visa that takes a whole page up (as if you go to Burma you get a little stamp same as Thai Imm gives you).
* If you do not have 20 US dollars (700b at HH exchange-booths) they will charge you 1000b.
* If you take your wife/lady and she has a passport of her own, on presentation of her pazzy+100b she can go into Cambodia with you and you can then both check-out the market area beyond the gates + down the hill from the Imm offices.
* From Nang-Rong you go East along the main road till you see a big overhead green sign. Chong-Chom is up there, and you turn right + carry-on for about 35-40Kms (the road ends at those gates).
* Kap-Choeng Imm Office is 15kms before the border & is on your right as you go into town, its a pink building set back in a government-area,the gateway is before you get to the Bangkok Bank on your left, opp a green-fronted shop.
* Total distance from N.Rong is about 130kms to border (on good roads).
I hope this may help some of you out there in Huahin who maybe planning a trip out East to see your wife's family and also need a visa-stamp. It was ALOT less hassle than Ranong.

Hey Kendo...it was maybe your info that inspired me to use C.C. for my stamp. Will let you know when I'm next passing by your house and may be armed with a few 'cold ones'...cheers now...U.S.

U.S,
We are living in the U.K will be up there in November, my employment is looking dodgy at this time so it's heads down and work hard, if it all goes belly up i might take a year off and live in Kap Choeng and enjoy the farm and fishing and totaly switch off about containers.

Did you have a walk around the border market 2km before the border post i think it's well worth a look.

Kendo.

Yeah Kendo, did that market, nowt flash there really, but my Mrs sniffed out a really nice (even I think so) granite-type monk figure...all I need now is a mantlepiece to sit it on.
Good luck with the work-side of things...cheers now.
