Francois,
I didn't explain it very well this morning, but the train that departs from BKK and arrives at Butterworth and returns (that run) definitely has 1st class air con carriages, but as noted I don't see much point in spending the extra when the trip is about 5 hours from HH to BKK and the traveling is being done early in the morning when it's not too hot.
It's the 05.34 train that's scheduled to pass through HH to BKK as per this site:
http://www.tourismhuahin.com/trains-huahin.php
It's the big train that has come up from Malaysia. However, check the time!!!

I used the overnight from Chumporn to Bangkok several times a year for 10 years .Never late .First class gets you a private cabin with sink .The cabin has 2 sets of bunkbeds with a dividing door and a fold away table so ideal for families .We always used to knock back a few changs in the buffet car .Get talking to the railway police and the staff won't kick you out at 9pm .You will end up doing karaoke and drinking whisky with the BIB until you fall into your bunk .Much better than the buses IMO .The daytime train to Petchburi is 14 bt a ticketcattle class .

You're right...

I took several times the train between Ayutaya and BKK... 3rd class is OK for me for all the reasons you explained before but as well for one more reason : shooting pictures...it's more convenient with open windows... :)

That's right... Sorry, I took the wrong train :)

:offtopic:

I just wanted to emphasize your point of view and explain that I prefer to travel in 3rd class, with open windows, that in A/C carriages with clogged windows...

Agreed. I've been on those early morning trains before but from to HH down south in the evenings. It's only some 1,100 Baht from HH to Butterworth in 2nd class air con. That's 17 hours+++. They're the same trains that simply turn around at their terminus.
lomu, samesame me and just came up from hat yai a few weeks ago so that's why THB522 jumped off the page. don't know where OP got those numbers, THB52 would be more like it.
if he wants to pass THB522 through the window i'm sre the ticket seller will be happy to oblige though!

Marky,
a bit strange but then I've always found their website to be a pain in the neck. Go to the station and you should certainly do much better than THB522 to BKK.
Have a good trip!

Last tip buy the cheapest seat and then sit in the resteraunt and have a few early morning sherberts coffee or even breakfast
Thanks for the advice. Sounds like everything else in LOS!
