Too many wannabe Rambo's and John McClane's on here for my liking, however well trained someone is in the use of firearms. Everyone is both over emphasising the likelihood of an intruder, and under assessing the risks of having a firearm in the house. Presumably this firearm would be kept somewhere locked and safe to avoid it either being stolen or picked up by, say, a child. So this secure location would also need to be accessed quickly and easily in the unlikely event of an intruder, who may or more likely may not be armed. Assuming the firearm is then got out from its secure location without alerting the intruder, the intruder is then shot, presumably dead. Given that it is illegal for a foreigner to own a firearm and difficult for a Thai to legally own one, unless you have pots of money (and even then no guarantees) you will deservedly end up in prison, and possibly on a death sentence. Sounds like a great way to deal with intruders to me!

Crimefighting
Perhaps the thread should be re named crime prevention, crimefighting is the job of the police however efficient or not they are.
Firearms
Quite interesting to see the different reactions to my questions. Once in a different country I had to fight an intruder. He had a knife, I had a gun (which I fortunately did not have to fire). Guess who gave up and ran away?Wanderlust wrote:Too many wannabe Rambo's and John McClane's on here for my liking, however well trained someone is in the use of firearms. Now, if there is anyone in the forum who has actually faced an intruder I would appreciate hearing about his personal experience. Thank you.

I have never faced an intruder because I have never had one wherever I have lived, so I can't give any experience on that. However I would like to ask what you might have done if your intruder had also had a gun? Would you have shot first and hope that you disabled him from shooting?I would assume that any criminal carrying a gun does so with the intent of using it if required.
Re: guns
Our's ran away, there was 3 of us chasing him though so hardly blame him. Now, if there is anyone in the forum who has actually faced an intruder I would appreciate hearing about his personal experience. Thank you.
Who will protect your family when you are serving 20 years for illegally shooting the b******* ?Lung Per wrote:Shoot the bastards, ask questions later. They have no business breaking into my house, stealing my money, raping my daughter or wife, etc.
It comes across that you are too cowardly to have a fight with any other weapons of your choosing, instead you seem to want the option of simply pulling a trigger.

Crime fighting
The discussion seems to be getting out of hand and moving away from my original question, which was
Quote; I wish to be able to protect myself and my family from criminal intruders, burglars, thieves and other scum. I have heard that under Thai law one is free to shoot burglars in self defense. Therefore I wish to own a gun.
Question 1: Do I need a license to own a gun and if so, where do I go for the license.
Question 2: Where can I by a gun and ammo?
Please advise. Unquote.
The variety of responses are only to be expected. Thanks to y'all for your consideration and advice. We are all entitled to voice our opinion freely. I am sure you mean well, whatever your viewpoint may be.

Correct, i have come to realise from this forum, the above list is a very long one.buksida wrote:I think firearms are on that list of things that aliens cannot legally own in Thailand ... could be wrong though.

Going back to what happened when confronting an intruder, I reported on another thread on here last year that 2 intruders walked in to house in broad daylight at this time last year.
As soon as they saw me, they did an about turn and left immediately. Maybe my welcoming smile was as effective as a firearm
Better still, nothing was stolen, nothing was damaged and nobody was raped.

To re-itterate there are strict requirements for Thai nationals to obtain licences for firearms and foreign nationals are only issued licences under exceptional circumstances, ie: DEA personnel and the like that work in Thailand. YOU will not be permitted to legally own/carry/use one here.
Do some research:
-Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive Articles and Fireworks and Imitation of Firearms Act, B.E. 2490 (1947)
-Ammunitions, Explosives, Fireworks and Firearm Equivalents Act 1947
-Ministerial Regulation No.1 (1977
-Ministerial Regulation No.2 (1977)
-Ministerial Regulation No.3 (1977)
-Ministerial Regulation No.4 (1977)
-Act Controlling Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks and Imitation of Firearms No.4 (1967)
-Notification of the Ministry of Interior. Appointment of Registrars, Officers and Officials under the Firearms, Ammunitions, Explosives, Fireworks and Imitation of Firearms Act 1947

You sound like you were disappointed, Big Boy!Big Boy wrote:,.............. nothing was stolen, nothing was damaged and nobody was raped.

Seriously, and I grew up on a farm where a firearm was just another tool,
the opportunistic type of burglar that you are likely to encounter in a house break-in, is not likely to be carrying a gun. From what I can see they would not have the price of the bullets, never mind a gun. The "professional" burglar that is likely to be armed with a gun, would not be picking on your local housing estate. Just my take on it.

May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
I pity the victim with a gaping stab wound/ crushed skull etc who was not prepared, gun or otherwise!
What other justifications/excuses can we give for those that wilfully invade other peoples properties, assault/kill/rape/intimidate etc and try to take what is not rightfully theirs??
I know certain governments seem to think it is a God given right no wonder "citizens" decide to do the same.
