wood molding ??

Post by Chas »

I am trying to finish off a room and I just can not find a supplier for wood molding.

We must have 20 suppliers of ceramic tiles here in Hua Hin but even the lumber yards I checked just do not carry molding.

Where are all the builders and projects in this construction boom town going for their molding. .or have times and styles changed so much that such things have been replaced or phased out?

Back in the states, the equivalent of Home Pro carried these things, offered an incredible variety and even cut them to length.

I need simple "stock" 4inch baseboard molding and 1 &1/2 to two inch molding for ceiling trim.

I have taken to wandering the back roads and byways of Hua Hin trying to find a place. I may start wandering around Cha am if I cant find anything here.

We get ours from Bua Bang Yai on the left hand side between Cha Am and the premium outlet .We also have some custom made to order in Hua Hin .

You may find that general builders have problems with fitting esp. the ceiling mouldings .

In our experience it is always worth paying extra for proper tradespersons that are skilled in a particular field to do your finishings .

Best of luck

Thanks for the quick response!

Lockwood, I am saving Bangkok as a last resort. If I cant get what I want here then I will pm you for details but 88 seems to have a good source so I will try that tomorrow.

88 the "general builder" and the "proper trades person" in this case is me! I am not particularly skilled, but I can cut and install a simple baseboard and a crown molding and have indeed done so on many occasions.Such things are a hobby for me that I usually enjoy and that I am used to doing for myself. If I had a builder it would be very easy. Just have him do the shopping for the molding.

Indeed, I have considered hiring someone to do my lumber shopping as I have come to hate walking into lumber dealers here. They are NOT accustomed to farangs because they always deal with Thai contractors and I have yet to feel welcome or respected in any of these places.

There is one (Pongpen I think it is called. .near the palace) which I will not return to ever because I was treated so badly there. Even today, at one yard when a saleswoman finally asked me what the hell I wanted, I thought she was going to yell at me to get out. Of course, the owners in the air con offices could not care less.

Pranbury has a couple of lumber yards. They seemed like nice people but not much english, so if your Thai is not to good you might want to take a Thai speaking friend along.

Good Luck

success of a sort

Post by Chas »

After an hour of driving around north of Cha am and three stops at different places with no luck, I finally found a place that sells the molding that I wanted for the ceiling trim. . but it was the only kind they had so I was not totally successful. Thankfully, the people were civil to me and the experience was not an unpleasant one.

I am still interested in finding a supplier in Hua Hin. . .it just must be available somewhere in town. I can't believe that all these hundreds of builders and contractors currently working here go to Bangkok for finishing supplies like this.

still looking

Post by Chas »

I am bumping this up because I am still looking for a nearby supplier. . . someplace here in Hua Hin must carry stock molding. With all the construction here . . .there has gotta be a place in town.

Just getting ready to finish off the home office and I need a whole bunch (sorry for the technical term here) of ceiling trim molding . .. a half inch or so thick and almost two inches wide. ..with a beveled edge. Standard stuff.

Home Pro sells some of this but the prices are unreal.

I did find a Hua Hin supplier once just by accident while wandering around in the hinterlands. .but I cant for the life of me figure out how to get back to it.

One of the best wood shops I've seen for mouldings, windows, doors, knob type things that go on top of posts/stair bannisters, small range of solid teak furniture etc is in Pranburi. Don't know the name but a large double unit place with everything on view as whole frontage is glass or open, so basically you can't miss it.
From Hua Hin on Petchakasem Road go through into Pranburi and there is a major cross-junction with traffic lights, probably about halfway or just over halfway into Pranburi town. Filter left at those lights and it's on the left about half a km.
Our builder gets his windows/doors from them, haven't been there for ages but recall some of their items not being that cheap as they are used a lot by Hua Hin builders so got on the gravy train, but cheaper than Hua Hin places still.

They got a workshop out the back that they let you look round, staff are out there handcarving designs on teak doors. You can give them your own personalised design, I've got a big Tottenham Cockeral on my front door complete with spurs (only kidding).

Goodus luckus,

Our wood molding (on the wall around the floor) was made by a local builder's wood shop. I don't think he is in business any more, but for the ceiling molding are you set on wood?

We found a guy that does molding in a gypsum like material that you paint. It may be hard to tell in the photos but the molding and the ceiling are white and the walls are cream or eggshell color and it looks good with less care and maintenance than wood. It's fast and easy to work with and has no seams or nail marks. The guy cut and installed it in our entire house in a couple of days at much less than the cost of wood...

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Chas -

On the way north past Palm Hills there are two door shops. The second one has a bannister and stairs in the front with some sample doors.

We were in there the other day buying a door and I believe they have exactly what you've been looking for.

Chas, I am shopping for wood molding now also.

There is another door shop on the way to Cha Am just shortly before the door shop just mentioned. The guy there told me they have oak molding for 60 -70THB per meter. I have been in to see the molding yet.

I bought a teak door from them. The service was slow but the door looks great.

HH Farang, Your pictures look nice.

Can you let me know how to contact the guy that did the molding. Also, if you can provide some general costs, that would be great.

Thanks

Found it !!

Thanks so much TIGR.

The place you mentioned is just perfect! I recommend it.

It had exactly what I wanted and more. Seemed like a pretty wide selection of moldings and trim. The folks were as friendly as can be and delivered the stuff to my door immediately. The woman who helped me spoke no English, but she was patient with my Thai and we got along just fine.

Very good prices too. (One bundle of strapping . .not the joined kind . .580 baht.)

The added advantage is that they are relatively close to where I live.

Just to repeat, it is the second "door place" past Sa-pi-lee as you head north to Cha Am from Hua Hin.
