Thai law

Post by uncle tom »

Can anyone tell me, is Thai law defined and interpreted in Thai alone? - or are there approved translations into English or other languages?

- sorry if this sounds a bit mysterious, but I'm looking at some commercial opportunities, and want to get my head round some of the fundamentals of Thai legal principles, even if the practice is not always consistant..

You can buy English translations of Thai law but couldn't say if there is an 'approved' version, maybe an email enquiry to a couple of law firms can clarify. Thai language always prevails and cases are conducted in Thai language only I believe
Legally, even if there was an 'approved' version, I would assume this particular law, (an English translation ironically), would render any 'approval' meaningless:
"Section 14:Documents written in Thai & English: Whenever a document is in Thai language & another language, & there are discrepancies between the two versions the Thai document shall govern."

sorry if this sounds a bit mysterious, but I'm looking at some commercial opportunities, and want to get my head round some of the fundamentals of Thai legal principles, even if the practice is not always consistant.
These guides from Bangkok firms contain useful info IMO (hope links are ok with admin!?):

Some info may be dated as things change fast here.

Good luck,

I think this link might be an extended version of the one SJ helpfully posted, though I am not really sure.
