People are eternal optimists whether we admit it or not. I've seen non-religious people become very religious in their waning years. I think in a way it's just hedging your bets.
No one wants to think that when you die that's it... nothing... nada... no more anything, so a lot of us become "religious" in some form or other when we realize we are in our twilight years and won't live forever.
Unfortunately for me, I was raised Southern Baptist Christian and that pretty much ruined the whole idea of religion for me.
From all I've read and heard, I like Buddhism the best of all religions if you have to subscribe to one because it seems to be the only one that is basically peaceful and not trying to force itself down every one else's throats, but the belief of reincarnation, especially the one that the life form you come back as is dependent on how you live this life is not very appealing to me, if you know what I mean. I'm afraid I may come back as a frog or worse!
