Boring games?

Post by lomuamart »

As the second cricket test against The Aussies and The Open at Turnberry start today, I thought that this was an amusing article:

Cricket - Salad sandwiches, sunny afternoons, Bombay Saphire & Swheppes, old school ties, panama hats, can't see a bloody thing........suites you sir!

Golf - Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Been to both and just ended up as a good venue for a piss-up.

If you're in business then play golf as many deals/business are done on the course or at the driving range, but as a sport.....well.....it's a good walk.

As for cricket, it's strange that it's got a snooty/country gent image in the UK but in South Asia (India/Pakistan etc) it's the common man's game that every kid aspires to, quite a contrast.

Football (the association variety) was always the game of the man in the street, because it could be, and usually was, played in the street. Cricket and rugby used to be 'toff' sports, because they were traditionally played at public schools, which wouldn't be seen dead taking soccer seriously until about 40 years ago.

But let's get real, chaps - how many top-level cricket and rugby players are 'posh' these days? They may still be, in general, a social and intellectual notch or two above the average British footballer, who would probably be in jail if he hadn't eventually worked out that kicking a ball was more lucrative than kicking people in the street, but, frankly, who isn't?

The eternal problem for cricket and, to a lesser extent, rugby is access to the game for youngsters. Schools no longer have the facilities, and most of them seem to think that 'competition' is unhealthy. No losers in this school...

Rugby Union has changed immensely since my playing days and has become an exciting, running game, rather than a dour forward battle in thick mud. Most of the rule changes have been positive. Cricket has introduced updated, shorter versions, though IMHO opinion the 20-20 game is a different sport altogether, requiring different skills. Unfortunately, considering the dwindling attention span and requirement for instant entertainment of the average human, I fear test and county cricket may not survive much more than a decade or so.
This is the way

I actually really enjoy watching snooker or pool on True Sports. I can sit there for hours and it doesn't put me to sleep, go figure.

Football, NFL, NBA, Rugby, Aussie rules doesn't either, but turn on cricket, golf, badminton, tennis, bowling, baseball or the like and I'm out in 10 minutes. Pete

If I'm with a group of friends at a bar, or house, I can watch most any sports.

By myself I don't watch any.

Love to play different sports (or try to) but watching isn't a big thing for me. But then I'm not a big television fan anyway.

I can't watch "The Beautiful Game" as it is too much seemingly unstructured running around and passing and not enough scoring, but I watched "The Open" yesterday from 3 p.m till 1 a.m. and intend to do the same today!

People usually watch the same sport(s) they like(d) to play.

The most boring one I ever tried to watch was curling! :?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Only a couple of weeks ago, I discovered that we had The Golf Channel on cable. I'd watched bits and pieces of the French and Scottish Opens and a big tournament in The States - live.
Was really looking forward to live coverage of The Open yesterday from about 5-6pm, but cable didn't show it. Only got a repeat of a competition at Wentworth. I've been reliably informed that coverage is on ESPN which evidently cable here can't hack into. I was most disappointed.
As an aside - for anyone who's watching it, Ailsa Craig is that big lump of rock sticking out of the sea. It's a bird sanctuary. If you see that on the telly, there a good chance that you'll get glimpses of The Isle of Arran as well. I used to go there regularly as a kid. The island's 52 miles round by road and has 7 golf courses on it. A players dream.

A few years back, I won free tickets to any 24 sporting events (excluded Wimbledon and FA Cup Final) - to be used within a 12 month period.

I did not try cricket (most awful game on Earth). Of the rest, the worst was the World Snooker Final at the Crucible in Sheffield, closely followed by the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The best events were the many boxing matches I went to, closely followed by the Ryder Cup (and I don't even play golf).
Championship Plymouth Argyle 1 - 2 Leeds Utd

Points 46; Position 23 RELEGATED

Bloody hell what a prize. Worth a fortune. British grand prix alone is a few hundred. And then there's the 6 nations and the motorcycle grand prix...

Usually the Italy and Scotland games aren't too hard to get in. But France, Wales and Ireland game tickets are as hard to get hold of as doctors piss...

Come on BB, what was the full list of events you went to see?

Going to live cricket can be a crack, far better than watching on the telly. I'm not a great cricket lover but went to a few one day internationals at the Oval and some test matches (just one day) and they were great fun! The best ever was the 92 Cricket World Cup and seeing England beat the Aussies in Sydney - One of Bothams last great matches! Huge fun and up there with my best sporting moments. :D

Share your view on motor racing though and watching snooker - playing is far better!
