Social Rugby

So what is going on around here and where does it happen? This section is for discussion on local events, festivals, and holidays as well as activities and things to do.

Social Rugby

Post by Jaime »

Is there any ex-pat or Thai 'social rugby' played in or around Hua Hin? Anyone know? Might be interested to get involved on some of my longer stays if there is any.

Rugby social?

Post by troopie »

I would also be interested in knowing that.
I would also be interested in knowing if there are any other rugby fans who feel like getting together to watch games, on TV or DVD, with some suitable liquid refreshment. I miss the rugby social life I enjoyed in Tokyo!

If anything is going on in the last week in Feb and/or the first 2 weeks of March then I’m in.

Hopefully on this trip the wife and I can make some progress towards being in Hua Hin long term or at lest more often so I would be very interested in such a place.

I was in HH while the British Lions wre in New Zealand and a lot of the bars were showing the games live. I was in the Limelight Bar and they had functions advertised while the games were on.

Might pay to have a word with some of the bar owners around the time that the 6 nations starts and see if they would be willing to put on an evening for you all.

It was tough work finding somewhere to watch the 6 Nations in HH last year although Berny's showed every match. Bless you Berny for letting me watch the first Welsh Grand Slam since I was a kid!

Ken at Crawfords also tried his best to get the Wales-NZ game this season but it wasn't live on any of the channels. As things turned out it was just as well I missed it....

Even if you only have cable it is possible to get some rugby as the French channel shows their international fixtures, some Heineken cup and French championship matches. My withdrawal symptoms were so bad in November that I stayed up till 5am to watch France vs. South Africa live.

I know that the Thai police and military play rugby (there are inter-service matches at Lumphini each year) and there are a few bases near Hua Hin. Maybe they have something going on or would welcome some farang involvement if they play the great game of rugby football? Just a thought if anyone wants to do some research!

Troopie, as you are resident in Thailand, I know there are ex-pat teams in BKK - if you can travel then maybe you could join a club up there. A team in HH would be nice though, even if its only a sevens/touch/informal thing.

I will be around at the end of March for a month if anything comes up! Haven't played for 5 years though so I have become quite jelly-like!

Jamie. I can imagine it now, the third remake of the "Mean Machine", Picture the Thai Men in Brown playng a team of Expat Bar Owners.

I am sure there would be no shortage of people that would be more than happy to play and exact revenge on the men in brown for all of their wrong doings over the years that they have lived in HH.
It would be a sight to behold.

Perhaps some ring in recruits could be taken from some of the tattood no shirted farangs that the people of HH are complaining about in other post on the board

Many of the bars around town show as much of the "other" codes of football as possible. The Aussies at Goanna's certainly find more enjoyment in rugby than :guns: soccer and will be showing as many games as they can.

I'd be interested in joining in any social activities involving rugby, I particularly enjoyed the after game activities...

Well REAL rugby begins soon after the 6-Nations kick-off, with the 1st Super 14 game (the new boys of the
Cheetahs v the mighty Bulls in Bloemfontein) on the 10th. Might be
interesting to see how the other new team, the Western Force, do --
their first game is against the Brumbies same day.
You can find a full schedule at

Oh, & I am indeed another Boks supporter but I'm from the other side of the Limpopo. Nonetheless, glad to know there is another Castle drinker in HH!

'Castle?' I was always assured that this was the equivalent of mozzie piss and that real men drank Windhoek or Hansa!

Castle rules!

Post by troopie »

Say what you like, but:
(a) Castle has a 94% market share in SA (Eat your heart out, 'King of Beers'!)
(b) It used to sponsor the Boks, before they went all PC

Anyway, Castle is at least reliable, whereas I have had some real bad Windhoek (which is also somewhat pricey), & Hansa ditto!
Anyway, in my area of Africa, our beer was Lion -- not recommended!

hi
i know this isnt about hh but in phuket they have the phuket vagabonds and the older members are now know as the phuket viagra bonds
anually they have an international 7`s tournament
this year attracted some big names from some south african english and austrailian ex pros
it was even telivised ( the highlights anyway) by ubc
a fantasic couple of days had and nights all proceeds went to the local tsunami affecter orphanage
maybe you could get a team together to join the competition i think it took place in may
but sure if you do a google seach for phucket vagbonds you will get more info
even if you dont get a team together it is well worth a couple of days down in phucket for this
the tournement is played in the karon stadium
thanks

Er,
I used to play full back for the school and town colts until my eyesight got so bad I couldn't judge the high "up and under" and ran in the wrong direction.
I was quickly moved to left wing, where I was equally useless and finally wing forward, with the sole aim in life, according to our coach, of killing the fly half. Needless to say, I was equally proficient at that as well.
At the end of my playing career, I turned out for a big 7's tournamant at Richmond.
I never got hold of the ball. Tried to tackle, but was always 10 mins too late.
If any of you professional players fancy calling me out of retirement, forget it.
I'll watch :thumb:
