My Maxnet?

To repeat my big question here . .are TT&T and TOT the ONLY choices I have in Hua hin?

If they are, then I will take another run at changing my DNS numbers . .but they wont stick!!

For ADSL unfortunately yes, you can go via CAT but they still need to rely on TOT or TT&T lines so are just as bad and just as incompetent. True and KSC won't bother with Hua Hin because the market isn't big enough.

The only other options avoiding these two are iPStar satellite, which won't work when its cloudy, or EDGE/GPRS via mobile - which can be painfully slow at times.

Sadly Thailand is in the dark ages when it comes to internet connectivity and that isn't going to change for a long time. As long as governments continue to censor it and hinder productivity online it will remain this way - hence the Thai phrase "len net" which means "play on the internet" - they still don't see it as an essential component to modern business ...

I think TT&T found out about http://www.opendns.com/ and blocked it. When I click on step 1 I get thrown off. Shucks.

I doubt its blocked, more likely a crap connection which is no surprise on Maxnet.

We also have to remember that it has been pissing down in Hua Hin for the past week or so - this does not help when all of our connections are routed through 30 year-old cabling and junction boxes.

For those genuinely concerned about stuff being blocked have a look at www.torproject.org - it has a nifty Firefox add-on that works a treat!

(btw Firefox 3.5 went live today so give that a spin too!)

After several attempts I finally got in and went through the procedure. It seems to do the trick - no error messages and a faster connection. Mucho gracias.

Seems like TT&T did something about the problems over the week-end. After a few days with difficulties connecting to European sites the speed and connectivity is now up to previous standards (how low the may be), at least in my area of town. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

here y go mate

1) See the two computers icon in the base bar at the bottom right of your screen? Double click on there. A box comes up called Local Area Connection Status. Click on the Properties button.

2) Now a second box comes up, with a dropdown list in it. Select Internet Protocol so its shaded, then press the Properties button underneath.

3) Now down at the bottom of the box should be a set of two DNS entry fields...a primary DNS server and a backup one. In the first enter 202.69.137.138 (thats Maxnets) and in the second 208.67.222.222 (Thats ODNS's server). Press OK and work your way backwards out of there.

That should set up Maxnets main DNS as your primary, and ODNS's server as your backup.

The two main ODNS servers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Ah yes....Maxnet, like all Thai companies, seem to not understand billing procedures, and send out splash screens to tell you that you owe them fees. These, unless one of your DNS servers is set to a Maxnet server, will stop your browser working. The only cure is to keep one DNS server a MAxnet one.

Blaming issues on your computer, then your router, then the line to your house is a three stage way for the beefy twat to separate you from your money....they do that to everyone to cover up the fact they are untrained unqualified monkeys who like to steal money off the unwise.

The slowdown is only on international websites. This is because they are repairing international cables, due to be finished mid July.

The installation of new international cable link ups, more international bandwidth for Thailand, finished by November.

I have maxnet premier, and speed has been not so hot over the last month, though the last few days seem to be better.

However, on Friday afternoon there was an outage for 3 hours which TT&T told me affected all of Prachuab Kiri Kahn (maybe more ). Since 3 hours of downtime is not what i need, i was thinking of also getting another package from a different provider. I read above that True and KBC dont operate in HH, leaving TOT.

Whilst the backup solution will be to roll over to the reserve provider if the main one crashes, i am wondering if it would be possible to use both providers at the same time ? I am guessing it wouldnt as routers i have seen only handle one incoming connection, unless someone knows different....

Anyone got any experience ?

Your only alternative for ADSL in Hua Hin to TT&T are TOT which are, quite frankly, just as bad. KSC & True will provide corporate dedicated leased lines & fibre but they are obscenely expensive.

Personal recommendation:
Use EDGE via your mobile phone, I've been on this since my CAT connection collapsed 4 months ago and I haven't had a problem with it - its just as fast as your mickey mouse "3Mb, 590baht" bullshit the main providers are selling and you can access it remotely from anywhere that has a mobile phone signal close by.

I'll second that one. Everyone I know has ADSL and has non-stop hassle with it. I've been on EDGE for the last couple of years since I got here and mine always works when everyone else's doesn't. Just plug my Nokia in, no drivers needed, choose DTAC from the list of service providers (first time only, after that I just press connect) and away I go.
