The big boys play their reserve team, Plymouth just opt out. I'm afraid they'll never win it, and the league is more important.

I'm always greatful when they drop out
Championship Plymouth Argyle 1 - 2 Leeds Utd

Points 46; Position 23 RELEGATED

The Carling cup is just a Toy cup for the big boys (even Leeds droped a few 1st teamers)....I wonder if it would be more interesting if it was a British cup....and let the Scotish teams take part.....Celtic and Rangers would cause some interest but Torquay v Peterhead would be a trek.

:lach: Regardless of what they call it these days, Paul Sturrock has never led a team to victory in a League Cup match. We have to think up our excuses long before kick off :D

Yeah, Leeds are a truly terrifying prospect, nearly as scary as when Liverpool beat Inter, Barca, Real Madrid et al on their own ground.

A regular gripe of mine, but it will depend on whether they take their first team. Would you risk injury of World Class players against a 3rd division side?

I'm sure Rafa will be quaking in his boots when considering all forthcoming cup games:

- Lyon
- Fiorentina
- Debrecen
- Leeds

Maybe 10 years ago, but I'm afraid that even Paul Sturrock wouldn't, and doesn't take a game against 3rd division opposition seriously.

So what if you drop out of the competition? Liverpool certainly have much bigger irons in the fire, and the likes of Plymouth need to consolidate league status, rather try to progress in a mickey mouse competition.

For Liverpool what would they achieve by winning the cup entry in to the European losers cup competition - their fans would consider that to be failure.

All said tongue in cheek BB.

It will be a tricky tie, away at Leeds, but as you say it's a competition that is more of a hindrance than anything else nowadays.

Good opportunity to blood the kids but it doesn't make much difference to me if Leeds knock us out or we win the cup.

You won't be saying that if its your only route into europe!

Seriously, it will be interesting to see if the perceived increased competition in the PL does affect some of the top teams selections?

Chelsea usually put out a strong squad in any case.
