MORE BREAK INS MOUNTAIN VILL
Hi all,
I have lived in some really hard and nasty places in my career, and some in Asia too.... And the honest truth is that I feel more secure (generally) in Thailand than I did in Vietnam, and certainly far more secure than I did in the Philippines where everyone is armed, has semi-latino swagger, drunk and deadly. (But full of remorse after making sure you are full of lead.)
I have to wonder about an electric fence and a back up generator. Where does it stop? Claymore mines and kill zones? I think if it got to electric fences other than to keep the cows in that I would reconsider where I was living. I would expect to live behind electric fences and razor wire in Nigeria, Afganistan etc. But Hua Hin?
Yes I read the papers and yes I see that occassionally a falang gets topped. How many in HH annually? How many have an issue amore or issue financial that is the crux of the matter?
How many are truly just in the wrong place at the wrong time???? Not many I hazard to guess.
I come from Sydney: Violent home invasions occur. And Sydney is certainly not Kabul or Moscow or even London. There tends to be a reason other than a simple envy and lust to covert thy neighbors ass.
Your electric fence: if Somchai junior next door kicks his ball over the wall and follows it will he be fried like a fruit bat? What about Grandpa Somchai and his weak heart? What are your liabilities? Sorry, it may not be advertised as lethal force but could accidently turn out that way... and I would not like that on my concience or to end up the guest of the BIB while they work out who is liable. I am guessing the end result would make buglary seem cheap.
I make my bedroom the citadel of safety. Extra locks on both the internal and external doors. I lock my bedroom when I go to bed. They want to steal the TV etc fine. Go right ahead. Thank you Insurance. I figure I raise a ruckus, and the burglars will shoot through, but I WOULD NOT leave the locked bedroom until they had exited the building.
Know your neighbors.
Get a big dog.
Lock your bedroom. DO NOT confront them. They are scared, probably full of methamphetamines, and know if they get done they got a lot of jail time coming. Let them get out.
Just my 5 cents worth.....

Yes, lock yourself in the bedroom, hide under the bed, let them rob (maybe kill) you and your wife and children, then let them get out to go and do the same to someone else... that's a very nice liberal sentiment, but these people need to be arrested, locked up, or
Sorry, but I don't put up with criminals...

Sorry, but I don't put up with criminals...

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Not only do you not put with criminals hhf, you sem hell bent on blowing their brains out when they're armed with nothing more than your DVD player.
Electric fences sounds a bit OTT to me, will a security guard, copper, fireman come to your aid when the intruders entered after throwing a fire blanket over your back fence.
The sensible approach is residents chipping in for additional couple of guards, pay 1,500 Baht a month with 5 neighbours to have your own dedicated guard/handyman, a dog or other protection already mentioned.
They'll simply move onto the next project/house.
Something no-one seems to mention or never seem install in HH is motion sensor flood lights, is it a gecko problem ? They set off our CCTV cameras.

I have three of them, but the sensors themselves are chicken shit, so I gave up on them. I had them in Australia, and the sensor was adjustable for both range ans sensitivity.Super Joe wrote:Something no-one seems to mention or never seem install in HH is motion sensor flood lights, is it a gecko problem ? May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
I have dogs, I leave lights on all night, I have a (hard wired during construction alarm system), not a simple motion sensor system installed after construction and I still am concerned about criminals. You cannot ignore them and hide under your bed.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem!

f0xxee: I agree with you entirely. A few pieces of electrical equipment isn't worth the risk of getting maimed or possibly killed. The police are about as much good as a chocolate fire guard, so it's not worth calling them. It's also worth remembering that although most Thai men are not particularly large or macho looking, they are surprisingly strong.f0xxee wrote: I make my bedroom the citadel of safety. hhfarang: I hear what you say, but both you and I know that they won't get arrested or locked up. If your loved ones also locked themselves in their bedrooms they would also be out of harms way. Confrontation really isn't the answer...here...

I agree if you KNOW they are only after a few pieces of electronics, but you don't... there are a lot of sickos out there and all you have to do to verify that is read the news. I won't take any chances hiding and hoping they don't find me.
As I said, even if that works, you are not doing your neighbors or your community any favors. All of us need to fight crime (the police won't) or it will proliferate!

I'm with you completely on this. no way am i going to lock myself away and let some drug crazed Thai tosser help himself. if you don't stand up for yourself then who will.
the law here is very much on your side if someone breaks into your property. please don't give me all that about locking yourself away. stand up for yourself and your family and show these people that you will not take it.

We have 2 noisey dogs, external and internal lights left on night time, window grills and an alarm. To date this has worked for us. Security is all down to individual preference!
The key with burgarly is displacement so they move onto the next project. Sorry chaps. You need a United Front from all residents and developer, good communication and education.
You need EVERYONE singing off the same song sheet. Not Easy in LOS

I agree that the police won't do anything, but we don't have (and will never have) a gun in the house. I was talking to one of my Thai colleagues about this particular issue. She said she'd lock herself in the bedroom. I don't think that challenging one burglar is going to stop any further burglaries. They don't chat to each other and discuss which places are more or less dangerous to target. They're just opportunists.hhfarang wrote: All of us need to fight crime (the police won't) or it will proliferate!
miked: You say the law is on our side if someone breaks into our property. I don't think so. Especially here. It doesn't even apply in the UK. Remember the old recluse in Norfolk who got put in jail for shooting a burglar as he was leaving his house?
Sadly, we no longer have a dog to warn us of any unwanted visitors, but then again we don't live in a farang area. I'd be really p****d off if somone nicked my computer - but it's replaceable.

My problem which I think is common to many is too many bushes and trees. I don't have one spot, except straight down the driveway, where one wouldn't be set of continuously when the wind blows. As all this stuff grows what is a good spot now may not be in a few months.Super Joe wrote:Something no-one seems to mention or never seem install in HH is motion sensor flood lights, is it a gecko problem ?
