Just a general comment regardless if Hua Hin or anywhere else.
The major hotels will have kratongs available to purchase and allow a guest to float them in their pool, or down on their beach if they're beach front. The larger beach front hotels many times also have paper lanterns you can light and watch float away over the sea while making your personal Loy Kratong wishes for a better life, world, whatever you want to wish for. Most of these places will also have their Thai staff decked out in fancy Thai traditional clothes, and the women indeed usually look spectacular. Good photo op.
More interesting and fun to me is to go to a small beach restaurant/beer place and watch the Thai families show up and float their homemade kratongs in the sea. It's fun to watch the kids get all excited. Many times people bring some fireworks to set off, and the aforementioned flying lanterns as well. Many of the kratongs have some small coins attached and although the kids won't attack them, they'll wait until they capsize or sink then go diving for the coins. It's also a very romantic evening for couples who come to float their kratongs together, with the women probably wishing for marriage and the man something a bit more immediate and shorter term.
It's a good evening out as it's low key and family orientated, and you don't have all the hoopla as you do on New Year's and Songkran. Pete

A good change is that more and more people each year are getting away from the styrofoam floats and going with a natural base such as sliced banana tree. The government has been urging this for a long time as well and seems to be working to a degree.Big Boy wrote:Swimming in the sea for about a week afterwards is a wipe out - too much debris to enjoy it.Thai families show up and float their homemade kratongs in the sea.

Having said that, they still use small nails to attach banana leaf strips to the base and these indeed lay around in the surf and on the sand awaiting a foot.

In the afternoon there should be a display of kratongs made by the school children - just along the wall between the rear of HH temple and the school, and opposite Starbucks.
The parade of floats starts about 6.30 or so, going down Petkasem Rd and passing the Night Market. Last year it lasted almost an hour. Afterwards you could go to a small beach restaurant as Pete suggested.
If you are still in HH on December 5th - His Majesty the Kings' birthday, there should be a night market and events along the road leading from Petkasem down to the railway station.
Novembers and Decembers issues of the Observer should have details of all events.

A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.
As a side story, I spent Loy Kratong near my wife's village in Isaan on the Mekong river last year and it was spectacular. I recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to enjoy the holiday (especially this particular holiday) in an Issan town that is on a river.

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
It's was somthing like that i think about, so I will go to the lake in Khao Tao.Randy Cornhole wrote:Ive heard that they run a very nice traditional Loi Krathong in Khao Tao on the lake. Thats where i'd go and iv'e been to a few.
The beach is always hit and miss as the flower things never float properly.
Away from the tourists thats always the best place...
Thank you

Just for info, below is picture of one of the flying lanterns to be launched throughout the country night of Nov.2. This one looks like a Panda, as of course the zoo in Chiang Mai is still wrapped up in Panda mania. Pete

Yes, they're really starting to get creative. I saw one for sale yesterday made out of noodles. Base was some kind of flat lasagna type noodle and the sides small curly noodles. Good idea! The fish should like those also.

Another good place is in Pranburi on the river. Near the railway station/ bridge they have many stalls selling krathongs, food, lanterns etc. You can go down to the river bank to float your krathong and it's a brilliant sight with hundreds going down the slow moving river. There is a competition for best krathong and these are on display in one of the buildings. Some excellent krathongs from schools businesses etc. A nearby school is open for parking (free!). Also there are stage shows with music and traditional dancing. Fire works are set off later on from the bridge over the river. A great night.
