mail going out to Uk generally gets there ok
Its mail coming in that rarely arrives.
i also get mail from Malaysia which always arrives which suggests that mail from abroad vanishes in bangkok.
I'g going to try to get mail sent from Uk with the address written in both Thai and English, see what happens
I establised a PO Box nummber at HH Main PO when I arrived and have found it to be good. I am only aware of one letter not being delivered.
All mail sent overseas has reached its destination.
However sending packages into HH from overseas has only been 100% since I started using the UPS or Fedex Tracker service, although it was also OK when I once had a package insured from USA without the tracker service. So it seems these extra services have some more security which stops ' sticky hands'
I also had a PO Box in HuaHin for 5 years. OK - they were actually available then - but only one monthly pension cheque from the UK went missing during that time, and cash in notes foolishly sent by Mum. Plus my passport posted from Bangkok (which was found sitting in a pigeon hole upstairs in the PO.)
I posted a lot of parcels from HH to the UK, and only one went astray. That was tracked down in York sorting office, when it had been destined for Hull.
Overall no complaints. I've no doubt though that some mail is 'dumped' when delivery to a house mailbox has, for whatever reason, failed. It shouldn't happen anywhere, but does - not just in Thailand.
BUT - bank cards, like some packaging and bank notes, can be identified during routine mail sorting, and are pretty high risk items in the regular post.
During my recent visit to Thailand, [late September / early October], I posted 15 postcards back to the UK. I think it was 3 from BKK, 5 from HH and the rest from Chumphon. All arrived safely within 8 days.
I only used normal street postboxes. Where it said BKK / Other I split the delivery 50 / 50. My friends cynically remarked that both posting slots probably just go into one big bin anyway. Hmmm...
However, the same friends who live in Chumphon tell me they have never received mail from the UK. They receive their electricity bills and their subscriber TV channel magazine OK though. I was there when the postman delivered them - well it was a guy on a motorbike anyway. HT.
It may be rubbish - but by golly it's British rubbish.
Ive got some mail on the way from Uk
I copied / pasted my address in Thai from some local mail and the UK mail will have my address on it in Thai and in English
Lets see what happens
There was a thread a short time ago about receiving mail (or not, more likely) especially from the UK. can't find the thread so apologies for starting a new one.
Anyway ... to update....
I have not received mail as sent from the UK for a long long time and gave up getting things sent.
However this time I thought I'd try something different.
Prior to having a letter mailed to me from the UK, I scanned and emailed my address in Thai. The sender then put my address in English on one side of the letter and pasted my address in Thai on the other side.
Amazingly the letter arrived here 8 days later
Gotta try it again in case it was just a coincidence
Yeap tried the Thai address script. Must have been the debit card inside that lead to it disappearing.
Thought I might also try the "contact" details on Thai post so sent them an e-mail indicating the disappearing issues (nicely mind as I didn't want to inflame their sensibilities with accusations of incompetence/theft ect.).
That was weeks ago and amazingly have NOT received a reply NOT even an acknowledgment and yes we are looking into it and Yes we will get back to you like they send to you from Emirates airlines et al.
Il caveat emptor!!!!
I have been busy rebuilding a motorbike and have had a lot of stuff sent in from Europe, the States and Australia.
In all, 12 parcels were sent and 11 came through promptly depending on postage method.
Expedited post from the States usually arrived on the doorstep ( or the PO) withing 8 days. A little quicker from the UK, slower from Italy. (surprise surprise.)
I lost one box of Carbon fibre parts but I am not entirely convinced that it was lost in Thailand: it would have been worthless here. As I bought it on Ebay I whinged at the seller, and they re-posted a new order last Friday, the 31st October. It turned up, on my doorstep yesterday, 5th November! Unreal!!!!
Interesting point: the last order of Carbon firbre while worth 500 USD was taxed at 7 baht. I had an order worth 250$ taxed at 3500 baht. There seems no rhyme or reason. Before the trend was the stuff expedited was the high tax, the regular "First Class" mail cheaper. But the last parcel kinda screws that theory....
I have had significant problems with mailing packages of B-Day and Christmas gifts from the Hua Hin Post Office...they never arrive in the US. It is my feeling that if there is writing in english on the box it dissapears..either at the post office, or the driver who takes the mail to BKK or at BKK itself. Corruption is hard to track down. I Have been to the head honchos office at the HHPO but he acts like he doesnt understand the problem but when you realize that one of the former tellers was on a wanted poster for stealing 6 million baht last year it doesnt surprise me at all what is going on there. The fix, is to drive to Cha Am if you have to mail anything important as I now do that and have had no problems at all..if the HHPO loses all falang business then there will be someone somewhere who notices a decline in business...nah...
NJAF - if all of us up and went they wouldn't give a rats. Addresses in English/Thai little difference in my experience for incoming ex o/s.
The teller you mentioned has been probably promoted and is looking after the main branch ha, ha.
PS still waiting for a response to my original e-mails sent to HQ in BKK. I reckon that too hard basket must be getting full by now!
